Just as the company announced in a press release, OCZ launched its first non-solid state storage product on Computex. Dubbed RevoDrive Hybrid, this PCIe card combines an SSD with a 5400 rpm 2.5" drive.
The original RevoDrive X2 is consisted out of two PCBs connected via proprietary connector: Four SandForce Controllers, RAID0 resulted in wicked fast performance such as 740MB/s read and 550MB/s write
If you’ve seen RevoDrive, then you know that RevoDrive is essentially a dual-PCB design which features a main PCB that features a PCIe controller and two SandForce Solid State controllers, while the added PCB carries another two SandForce controllers (read: a four drive RAID0 array on a single card).

For RevoDrive Hybrid, the upper plate is now replaced with a 2.5" hard disk drive. Similar to Intel’s Smart Response Technology that debuted with Z68 Chipset, OCZ utilizes Dataplex, hard drive caching software rom Nvelo. Nvelo is a young company from Silicon Valley start-up which claims to have higher efficiency than afore mentioned Intel’s SRT. According to preliminary performance sheet, RevoDrive Hybrid achieves 575MB/s read and 500MB/s write.
For Computex Taipei 2011, the company removed the sticker from the hard drive in order to avoid advertising the competing companies. According to TechReport, the company still hasn’t decided on 5,400 rpm or 7,200 rpm drives. We expect to see one of more quieter hard drives. The model above carries a defaced 2.5" hard disk drive from Toshiba, as selecting Toshiba would be quite a logic move – why give out revenue to Samsung/Seagate or WD/Hitachi?
This sends a pretty decisive message to its competitors and old-school storage giants such as Seagate/Samsung and Western Digital/Hitachi. There will be two models available, 60GB/500GB and the 120GB/1TB, with the price starting at $349 and you can expect shipping products in third quarter of this year. Realistic target should be Back to School (August).
