Just like its predecessors, Dell decided to launch the new 24? UltraSharp display in somewhat of a silent mode. UltraSharp series of IPS displays always catered to professionals and the stealthy launches were always timed to gauge the sales and avoid shortages.
The screen quality always was a great asset, and it isn?t uncommon to see 24" Dells even in studios which utilize only Mac computers. However, with the new U2412M display, Dell sticking with the 16:10 form factor and still avoiding the mainstream 16:9 cinema widescreen ratio.
New display finally comes with LED backlighting, a 1000:1 contrast ratio (Dell is citing 1000:1 contrast instead of dynamic contrast range, which would be at 2,000,000:1), response time of 8ms (unlike 2ms offered on TN panels, IPS panels are a bit more ?lazier?, brightness of mere 300 cd/m2 (as a comparison, my 2408WFP features 400 cd/m2).
When it comes to connectors, UltraSharp does not disappoint but still offers less connectivity than previous generations: D-SUB, only one DVI, DisplayPort and four USB 2.0 ports. You won?t find a second DVI, HDMI, Component or Card Reader capabilities, which is a shame, really.
The lack of these features enables a more affordable price of $399, rather than $549 when 2405, 2408 launched.
UPDATE 7/27/2011: The Article has been updated since it has come to light that a PR agency with many numbers in their name has released the incorrect specifications stating that the monitor would be a 1920×1080 with 16:9 rather than the actual 1920×1200 with 16:10.
