Look at this assclown. Because he’s a tech nerd he thinks everyone else should be. If you give Sony your credit card information, and they get breached, and your info is stolen, how exactly is it the customer’s fault? And how exactly isn’t the company, which has a legal obligation to protect your information, liable for damages? You’re a tech guy with the IQ of a dust mite. A company takes on the role of storing financial information, and pursuant to all regulations must keep this information secure and private. Due to holes in their own security, this agreement was breached, and exactly what they’re bound by law not to do happened. If they were a smaller company they wouldn’t even be allowed to continue business.

I think you could make the case that they could suspend the account from making future purchases, if you really think the victim is to blame (not necessarily a fair assumption). But cutting off access to the stuff he actually paid money for already, like The Last of Us, just because he got hacked? Or rather, Sony’s account system allowed a hacker to fraudulently log in as him? That’s borderline illegal.

I can smell a class action lawsuit in the air…

A strong password will only protect against brute force attacks. Many passwords are stolen through phishing, viruses or security breaches of the host system, ie Sony in this case. Of course, Sony could never get hacked…

Sony has a responsibility to protect user data and sensitive financial information. By further punishing a subscriber for being hacked is obscene, as are their exploitative policies that basically coerce fraud victims to pay for fraudulent purchases.

Nothing about this is okay, and saying it’s the victim’s fault is ignoring Sony’s responsibility in all of this.

Furthermore I don’t think secure passwords are guaranteed protection. Of course they help, as does removing your cc info, but people should be able to trust Sony to protect their information.

Did anyone refund Sony for the psn hack or the Sony pictures hack? No. They had lax security so they had to suffer the losses. Now put the same mechanisms in place with this dude. Did he take steps to secure his account? No. No bailout. Suffer the loss.
