It isn’t normally a big deal when a system build cooperates with a retailer or an etailer on a new product or a new launch. However, it is a pretty big deal when a system builder allows you to build an entire system using Newegg’s website and configurator to build that system. You can test out the new iBuypower system configurator on Newegg’s website and see how it works for yourself.

The reason why this development is an important one is because iBuypower probably recognizes the value of having Newegg as a partner, and even more importantly Newegg’s customer service. There aren’t many PC builders out there with outstanding customer service or the infrastructure to handle complex customer service needs at a large scale like Newegg can. Really, Newegg has the most experience out of almost everyone and they already have a huge audience, so allowing Newegg users to configure systems on Newegg.com is a great idea.

Even though this is a Newegg-based configurator, they don’t necessarily make all of the parts available on Newegg available to you to build with. That would be the ultimate Newegg-iBuypower configurator if you could basically take any parts from Newegg and slap them in your iBuypower machine. That way, they can check for compatibility and buildability and then let you pay extra for changing your motherboards or PSU.

Once you’ve configured your system on Newegg.com they will configure, build and set up your machine to have it directly shipped to you, as if you had ordered it direct from iBuypower. This brilliance may end up helping iBuypower get an edge over their competitors whom mostly sell pre-built systems to retailers and custom built systems only to people that order direct from them online. I’m not entirely sure how much this will affect Newegg’s or iBuypower’s sales but I do think its a creative way to trying to encourage people to configure and build their systems through a 3rd party.

As Bitcoin becomes more and more boring (and standardized) the amount of companies that begin to accept it increase ever more. A few months ago, TigerDirect announced that they would be accepting Bitcoin and that clearly has motivated other etailers to do so as well.

Newegg Bitcoin

So, it comes as little surprise that Newegg today announced that they will also be accepting Bitcoins as a form of payment for products on their site. There are no restrictions on what can be purchased with Bitcoin on Newegg’s site, which makes it incredibly attractive to anyone looking to spend their extra Bitcoins. Even though sites like Amazon haven’t quite yet accepted Bitcoins yet, Newegg is an online retailer that does billions of dollars in revenue every year, unlike some of their smaller competitors. Really, Newegg is the biggest computer hardware vendor in the US and is looking to expand globally so this means a lot more for Bitcoin than a lot of people think.

While Bitcoin isn’t anywhere near the value it was near its peak, there is still a good chance that hundreds of millions of dollars that are looking to be spent could be spent with Newegg as opposed to forcing people to convert their Bitcoins into dollars (and pay fees). Allowing users to pay with Bitcoins directly merely reduces the amount of friction and makes it easier for them to spend their valuable Bitcoins on Newegg merchandise. However, Newegg also has to be careful about the potential of stolen Bitcoins being used to buy products and hardware and what the legal repercussions could be of hardware being purchased using stolen Bitcoin. While I’m sure Newegg Legal has been discussing this for months up until today’s announcement, there’s still a risk and it appears that Newegg is willing to take it.

I’ve been following NPD Sales charts for ages now, and it was always interesting to see how long can a title hold on them. Blizzard and EA/Maxis are long standing legends – in the past eight years, there haven’t been a weekly or monthly sales chart where at least one title from these companies didn’t occupy spot or two.
NPD Group decided to combine their weekly charts into monthly ones, probably for easier tracking – and making annual reports will be much more easier. But getting back on the subject, sales results for North America are quite interesting:
Top 5 PC Games for September 2008
1. Spore / EA Maxis / $50
2. Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning / EA Mythic / $49
3. The Sims 2 Apartment Life Expansion Pack / EA Maxis / $30
4. Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning Collector’s Edition / EA Mythic / $80
5. Spore Galactic Edition / EA Maxis / $79
As you can see even titles such as Crysis Warhead (#12) and S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Clear Sky (#25) didn’t make it into top 5. However, I congratulate to Ukranian team for delivering an excellent game.
What makes gaming sales so interesting is a look on overall software chart, where Spore and Warhammer Online made a major upset, beating AntiVirus and Office suites.
Overall Top 5 for September 2008
1. Spore / EA Maxis / $50 (Average)
2. MS Office 2007 Home & Student 3User / Microsoft / $125 (Average)
3. Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning / EA Mythic / $49 (Average)
4. Trend Micro AntiVirus 2008 Plus Anti-Spyware / Trend Micro/ $24 (Average)
5. Spy Sweeper / Webroot / $21 (Average)
Yes, Spore kicked MS Office Home & Student license from the top spot, which is very significant – August and September sales are dominated by “back to school” period – meaning people prefer playing games than working. No wonder there

We only wonder how much time NPD will spend to finally start tracking online game sales… that would be a major contributor to the actual fact sheet – as we all know, games are selling online like hotcakes, while PC retailers are lagging behind. And yet, in the “lagging behind” segment, Spore and Warhammer beat favorites in sales.
Once more, these stats are for North America only (received some comments in the past about WW rankings, had to clarify).
