Samsung (KRX:005935) is one of the foremost SSD vendors, with its Evo series often considered to be one of the best consumer-grade drives available today. The brand is now entering the external storage segment with the launch of the Portable SSD T1, an external drive that houses an Evo 850 SSD.

The drive comes with Samsung’s 3D V-NAND solution that can undertake writes at 450 Mbit/sec. One of the main features is the size, with the T1 only slightly larger than a USB drive. Samsung is also bundling AES-256 encryption support for business users, and is ensuring that the drive is platform agnostic by formatting it with the exFAT file system, which means that it will work on both Windows and Mac systems.

Samsung is making the T1 available in three storage variants. The 250GB edition will set users back $180, with the 500GB version retailing for $300. The 1TB variant costs $600. With cloud services readily available, it may not make sense to invest that kind of money in an external storage drive, but if you are a professional user that constantly has to move large files around, Samsung’s T1 may be a better alternative when compared to external enclosures that come with mechanical hard disks.

The T1 will be available in the US from later this month, followed by 15 countries around the globe.

With most of the details of the Evo 850 series already leaked, it was only a matter of time before Samsung (KRX:005930) officially unveiled the new SSDs. The South Korean vendor has done as much today, with the Evo 850 offering a significant increase in performance thanks to Samsung’s 3-bit 3D Vertical NAND (V-NAND) technology.

The Evo 850 series will be available in four storage variations: 120 GB, 250 GB, 500 GB and 1 TB. While pricing wasn’t revealed, a series of retailer leaks revealed that the 120 GB would retail for $100, 250 GB for $146, 500 GB for $258 and 1 TB for $499.

The new SSDs boast sequential read speeds of up to 540 megabytes per second (MB/s) and write speeds of up to 520 MB/s. The 1 TB variant also features Samsung’s TurboWrite technology, through which it delivers random write speeds of up to 90K IOPS. Data reliability is also enhanced, as users can undertake 80GB data writes per day for five years without running into any issues on the 500 GB and 1 TB versions. Other highlights include AES 256 encryption and ability to withstand changes in temperature.

With the Evo 850 series, Samsung is looking to diversify, and has mentioned that it will roll out drives that offer mSATA and M.2 connectivity in 2015. These drives will also feature the 3-bit V-NAND technology. The South Korean vendor is heavily touting the benefits of its V-NAND technology, which offers a high density and performance in a smaller footprint.

The new series of drivers will be available in over 53 countries around the globe later this month. Now that the new series is available, it is likely that the Evo 840 will see a price discount.

Samsung (KRX:005935) already unveiled the Evo 850 Pro series earlier this year, and it looks like we may be close to the launch of the Evo 850. The Evo 850 will be targeted at the mainstream audience, and will be priced lower than the Evo 850 Pro, which is aimed at enthusiast users.

The latest leak shows that the Evo 850 will be available in five storage variations: 120 GB, 250 GB, 500 GB, 750 GB and 1 TB. A Fry’s pre-order listing from October showed that the 1 TB version will likely retail for $499, which indicates a slightly higher price point than what Samsung targeted with the Evo 840 series. Pricing for other models is said to be $100 for 120 GB, $146 for 250 GB and $258 for 500 GB.

The new pricing is due to the next-generation hardware on offer, which includes 3-bit 3D V-NAND chips along with an in-house controller. Samsung is the only SSD vendor in the world who manufacturers all components in-house, and the Evo 850 is said to offer up to 550 MB/s reads, with write performance at 520 MB/s.

As for when customers will be able to pick up the Evo 850, current estimates suggest an official launch sometime in January 2015. If you were worried about the durability of SSDs, fret not, as a recent test revealed that most drives will likely outlive all of us.
