After launching the Titan X earlier this month, it looks like Nvidia (NASDAQ:NVDA) is set to unveil a second video card based on the GM200 silicon, the GeForce GTX 980 Ti. The card is rumored to offer significant increase in better performance when compared to the GM204-based GTX 980, which is why Nvidia may decide to call the card the GTX 990.

Based on the latest leak, the GTX 980 Ti is said to offer the full complement of 3,072 CUDA cores available in the GM200, while reducing the video memory to 6GB GDDR5, down from the 12GB featured on the Titan X. Memory bus will remain the same at 384-bit, and with the GTX 980 Ti, Nvidia will allow its partners to offer custom variations of the reference design that include custom cooling solutions and factory unlocked models.

Doing so has the potential for the GTX 980 Ti to be faster than the Titan X, which is only offered in a reference design with the stock cooler. There’s no confirmation as to when we’ll see the card, with the rumor only suggesting that Nvidia is targeting its launch to coincide with that of AMD’s (NASDAQ:AMD) Radeon R9 390X. The Radeon R9 300 series will make its debut at Computex, so it is possible that we may see the GTX 980 Ti at around the same time.

EVGA has launched the first GeForce GTX 980 with an all-in-one liquid and air cooler, with the card dubbed the GTX 980 Hybrid. The custom cooling option is claimed to reduce temperatures by a full 25 degrees Celsius when compared to a reference GTX 980, allowing EVGA to substantially overclock the card out of the gate.

The GTX 980 Hybrid features a base clock of 1291MHz and a boost clock of 1393MHz, with the vendor stating that there will be plenty headroom left for further overclocking. The card comes with 4GB GDDR5 memory on a 256-bit interface and a bandwidth of 7010MHz. The liquid-cooled portion directs heat away from the GPU, while the included air cooler is used to cool the memory and VRM sections of the video card.

This isn’t the first AIO liquid-cooled video card, as that distinction goes to AMD’s Radeon R9 295X2, but this is the first time we’re seeing this system used on the GTX 980. Based on Nvidia’s (NASDAQ:NVDA) new Maxwell architecture, the GTX 980 features the GM2014 GPU with 2048 CUDA cores.

The GTX 980 is listed on EVGA’s website for US $649.99/€779,00. If you’re interested in just getting the cooler, EVGA is offering it for $99.99.

MSI just announced that they are making a special limited edition version of the Nvidia GTX 970 Gaming 4G, with with an all copper heatsink and heatpipes. MSI calls it the Golden Edition and it is available in the US exclusively through Newegg.com.

MSI (TPE:2377) has released the Nvidia GTX 970 Gaming 4G Golden Edition and is available in limited quantities in the US and APAC regions. The sole retailer in the US is Newegg.com where the card is currently in stock and available for $399.99. This means it is commanding a $50 premium over the standard 970 Gaming 4G that goes out of stock as soon as they replenish the inventory. Nvidia GTX 970 is sure the hot item in the industry this last month or so and that is rightfully so since the card is a great buy in the mid $300 range and it performs like a champion. Not to mention that with these cards users have huge overclocking potential, making their money go farther in terms of performance. Speaking of performance this new Golden Edition also comes with a base clock of 1165MHz and a boost clock of 1317MHz and opposed the the standard Gaming 4G’s 1140/1279. But really with a full copper Twin Frozr V cooler this card should be able to run much higher while staying safe and cool. The cooler is less than two slots wide and should be ideal for use in multi-card SLI setups. To top things off the heatsink has been treated to prevent any tarnish on the beautiful finish.

This new Golden Edition follows in the footsteps of the N465GTX Twin Frozr II Golden Edition. In 2010 MSI released a special limited release of GTX 465 GPUs with all copper heatsinks and heatpipes. In 2010 they were a big hit and owners soon found out that they could flash them to a GTX 470. Here in the US, MSI cards are the preferred brand for those who like to modify the cooling by replacing the thermal interface material or using a watercooling block. The US office is pretty nice about letting people do this as long as users do not physically damage the card in any way.

Entries submitted to SiSoft’s hardware database revealed that the GTX Titan II features 3,072 CUDA cores and 3 MB L3 cache. The video memory is a mind-boggling 12 GB GDDR5, which is double that of the original GTX Titan. The memory interface is rumored to be 384-bit wide. Memory clock is at 6.00 GHz, with core clock at 1,100 MHZ and boost at 1,390 MHz.

While the GTX Titan II will undoubtedly be targeted at the enthusiast segment, details of a mid-tier video card in the GeForce 900 series were also leaked. In an Indian customs database listing, the GTX 960 was found to feature 4 GB GDDR5 memory along with a 256-bit wide memory interface. Earlier leaks of the video card referenced 3 GB video memory. The card was also found to feature a core clock of 993 MHz along with memory clock of 6.00 GHz. It is still not clear whether the upcoming card would be built on a cut-down version of the GM204 silicon or the GM206 GPU, as is being rumored.

The GTX Titan II is estimated to launch sometime in the latter half of 2015. There is no word on when the GTX 960 will be announced. Nvidia is said to be positing the GTX 960 as a successor to the GTX 760, and is said to target the $250 segment with the card. If true, the card would further cement the vendor’s lead in the entry-level market following the successful launches of the GTX 970 and the GTX 980 in the mid-tier and high-end segments.

Nvidia has already launched the Maxwell architecture with the incredibly efficient and modular GTX 750 Ti. However, this is their one and only Maxwell part and there are lots of people wondering when we’ll see the mid and high-end parts.

So, today’s rumor, about the GeForce GTX 880 and GTX 870 are clearly feeding off of this desire for information and likely enlighten when and what we can expect to see from Nvidia. The first and foremost important detail is that their sources claim that the GeForce GTX 880 and GTX 870 will be launching in the fourth quarter of 2014, most likely in October or November. This would give Nvidia ample time to prepare for the fall/winter game release rush and to have a new and exciting product for the holiday season.

Also, as expected this part will still be based upon the 28nm process from TSMC as the countless rumors of TSMC’s 20nm delays seem to never end. While we all believe that both AMD and Nvidia would love to manufacture their latest generation of high-end GPUs on TSMC’s 20nm process, it simply does not appear to be ready for their multi-billion transistor chips. Let’s remember that Nvidia’s GK-110 is actually a 7.1 billion transistor chip and there is a very strong liklihood that a Maxwell part like what we would expect to be the GM-110 is very likely going to be a GTX 9 series part and not a GeForce GTX 880.

As we saw from Nvidia in the past, they generally launch a cut-down version of the architecture first like the GTX 680 (GK104) and then once their process is more mature and their thermals/yields are manageable, then you’ll see a GTX 780 Ti (GK110) that fully follows the ‘full-blown’ architecture design without any compromises. A lot of sites are referring to the Maxwell batch of GPUs as GM204 and GM-210 however there is no reason to believe that Nvidia would do this, especially since the GTX 750 Ti is a GM107 chip. If the process hasn’t changed and the architecture is the same, I don’t see any reason why the GeForce GTX 880 could not be a GM-104 with its full-blown successor being a GM110 or GM210 if they decide to go with the 20nm die shrink (very likely).

However, some of the rumors continually refer to the high-end GPUs as GM204, which leads some people to believe that we may see more than just higher performance out of a GeForce GTX 880 or GTX 870 part. Realistically, though, I don’t really see this being possible and those parts may be reserved for professional or HPC applications that will get released shortly after the GeForce GTX 880.
