Gaming on notebooks has gotten better in the past few years thanks to advancements by both Nvidia (NASDAQ: NVDA) and AMD (NYSE: AMD), but it’s still miles behind desktop gaming. Alienware has a solution for that with its Graphics Amplifier — a stand-alone PCIe expansion slot in a self-contained box with a PSU that allows you connect a high-end GPU to your laptop.

The $299 box — only compatible with Alienware laptops at the time — contains four PCIe slots as well as a 460-watt power supply. Alienware says it will support any card, save for those that require more than 375W. That only rules out Nvidia’s Titan card, leaving plenty of high-end cards to choose from. Connecting the box to an Alienware laptop shuts down the laptop’s discreet GPU, however the integrated GPU on the Intel chip remains fully functional.

The Gaming Amplifier launches beside Alienware’s new laptop, the Alienware 13. The Alienware 13 comes in three different resolution versions — 1366 x 768, 1920 x 1080, as well as a touchscreen variant with a resolution of 2560 x 1440. For the base model, prices start at $1699 for the Core i5 edition. The Gaming Amplifier is available next month, and is only compatible with Alienware laptops.
