In a sea of different hard drive enclosures, one manufacturer came up with something original. Taiwanese DRAM giant produced HDD enclosure for SSD drives capable of exceeding current bandwidth offered by SATA-II standard.

The market of HDD boxes is an interesting one – almost no media writes about them, yet they are selling like hotcakes (or else nobody would see all those announcements coming in their respective inboxes) – but most of them are nothing but a plain vanilla or fancy-schmancy cases for a hard drive.

When I received XPG announcement from A-DATA, I said – Yes! Finally, something new. XPG Dual SSD 3.5″ RAID Enclosure is a “short” name for hard disk enclosure that can fit a regular 3.5″ HDD or something that this product is made to do – to max out SATA-II standard.
XPG will be the home of two 2.5″ SSDs, putting them in RAID0 or RAID1 (through a DIP switch) and maxing out SATA-II standard if you put anything faster than a bog standard el cheapo SSD. In case you don’t want RAID function, there is a cheaper model available, but then the question is why anyone would put an expensive SSD inside.

Interestingly though, A-DATA’s XPG logo reminds me of Shuttle XPC logo…

RAID box will come to market in time for CeBIT 2009, with a price of $59 for RAID edition, and $29 for a bog standard SSD box. I have to admit, it is a neat idea… if it supports SATA-III spec – it will be awesome. If not, two SSDs can reach as high as 500MB/s of read and 350 MB/s write, far beyond the capabilities of SATA-II spec that most of us have in their computers. Then, this investment seems…
