Thanks to our friends at ecoATM, we were able to gather some really interesting statistics about people’s trade-in/recycling behaviors after the iPhone 6’s launch. ecoATM is a company that owns and operates 1,100 machines across the United States that allow people to trade in their electronics and have them recycles for an instantaneous cash payout. ecoATM has been in this business for quite some time so they have experience with new product launches and sudden jumps in trade-ins.

As such, it comes as no surprise that they have some really interesting data about the iPhone 6 launch’s impact on iPhone trade-ins nationwide. Thanks to their data, we can see exactly what people are upgrading from as well as what kinds of devices are being replaced the most by iPhone 6s and 6 pluses.

So, what do these colored dots translate to? What do the blue (light), green (medium), light green (high) and orange (enormous) demand dots come down to?

EcoATM Trade-in Map

Since the iPhone 6 and 6 plus became available, ecoATM saw an increase of 80% on iPhone-related activity across their entire network of kiosks. And specifically in California, trade-ins were up 104% and in Texas 92%. EcoATM says that they normally expect such jumps in these areas because these regions are populated with plenty of techies. They did, however, discover some outliers including Tennessee, which saw an increase of 195% and Massachusetts with an increase of 168%. When looking at the map, it does seem a bit odd that the Tennessee/Kentucky/Ohio area is so dense with trade-in activity but the stats don’t lie. They also saw New York increase 92%, like Texas, which isn’t surprising considering how many iPhone users live in New York City alone.

In addition to actual iPhone trade-in’s ecoATM’s own site saw a huge amount of increase interest in their phone recycling for cash kiosks. Their website has seen a 200% increase in sessions since the launch as well as their kiosk locator page saw an increase of 250% during the same period since the launch.

People were also checking the prices of specific devices before they went to the ecoATM Kiosks (which you can do here)

The iPhone 5S saw an increase of 205% of inquiries, the iPhone 5C saw an increase of 110% and the iPhone 5 saw an increase of a whopping 480%. Clearly, you can tell that the majority of people looking to upgrade to the iPhone 6 are people with iPhone 5’s which makes sense since that would have been 2 years ago when people first signed their new 2-year contracts. Additionally, the iPhone 4S saw an increase of 100% in inquiries and the iPhone 4 saw a pretty sizable 240% increase as well.

But Apple’s iPhones weren’t the only devices that started to get more trade-in interest, there was plenty of interest in trading-in Samsung devices as well. The fairly new Samsung Galaxy S5 actually saw an increase of 77% in inquiries while the Galaxy S4 saw the biggest increase among Samsung devices with a 110% increase. The Galaxy S3 saw an increase of 63% and all Galaxy Notes (Note, Note 2, and Note 3) saw an increase of 93% in inquiries.

Overall, if you take all of this trade-in data into consideration it really seems like the iPhone 5 was the primary device that people were looking to replace with an iPhone 6 or 6 Plus, which admittedly isn’t very surprising. What may actually be more interesting is the regional increases, especially in Tennessee. Either way, there is a lot of very good data about the needs and wants of iPhone users and it really looks like a lot of people buying the iPhone 6 were already iPhone users and many of them were very likely iPhone 5 users too.

As Samsung always does, sometimes very well and sometimes horrifically, they like to advertise their products. It has without a doubt had a massive impact on the company’s image and virtually turned all Android smartphones and smartwatches into Samsung devices in the eyes of the layman. Most people nowadays just decide between two brands for the most part, Samsung or Apple. Sure, it makes things easier and there are plenty of other phones out there, like HTC’s One M8, but that doesn’t change the fact that most people think in a binary nature.

So, it comes as no surprise that Samsung followed up one of their most successful advertisements bashing Apple with yet another one that bashed Apple where it hurts, battery life. Their original bashing commercial made Apple’s iPhone seem old and tired compared to Samsung’s Galaxy S3 which had a bigger screen and LTE which the Apple devices didn’t yet. So, they were obviously trying to bash Apple where it hurt back then and they’re repeating the same formula this time but by bashing them on battery life. This is likely because Samsung knows that Apple will be releasing devices with larger screens, as rumored and will probably suffer from the same battery life issues of the current generation. A lot of people do get pretty good battery life out of their iPhones, but there’s also no denying that I’ve seen dozens of people with iPhones charging them in any wall socket they can find, more so than ANY other smartphone users I’ve ever seen.

Samsung is clearly trying to capitalize here on what people see every day while going out and traveling. The ironic part is that most of the people that are searching for power plugs are likely going to have to do the same with any Android phone they get, it just happens that they’re currently iPhone users. Also, using something like a Mophie juicepack case would also aleviate this problem which is one of the reasons why you don’t see as many people walking around with their chargers like they used to. However, this still means that Apple fundamentally has a power issue and that you have to make your iPhone twice as thick and MUCH uglier just so that you can get a full day out of the device.

So, last night T-Mobile made a lot of announcements with their new Uncarrier 5 event, that follows their Uncarrier 3.0 and 4.0 which eventually rolled into their Uncarrier 6 strategy as well. So, we can call last night’s event Uncarrier 5-6. Anyways, last night T-Mobile made three big announcements, mostly circled around their network and how they plan to make their network the best in the US at the most reasonable prices of all their competitors.

T-Mobile’s Uncarrier 5.0 Event, Image Credit: The Verge

Let’s talk about one of the most interesting things T-Mobile has announced so far at the event, and that’s their 7 day free test drive of T-Mobile’s network. T-Mobile’s John Legere basically announced that anyone that wants to try T-Mobile out can do so with an iPhone for free for 7 days to see whether or not the network is up to their expectations. And even more importantly, if it is better than what they’re getting with their current carrier. With this strategy, T-Mobile is being brilliant because one of the easiest ways to sell people something is by letting them try it themselves. And the truth is that its very hard to know whether or not you want to switch to a carrier without actually trying it for yourself. By giving people iPhones to try out the network T-Mobile solves this problem and already puts a device in people’s hands that they’ll likely want to keep anyways. This is something that none of the other carriers are doing and brings down the barrier for consumers to test out the network before they commit, which many people worry about when it comes to T-Mobile. T-Mobile was infamous for horrible coverage and nowadays, most of those issues are resolved but some people don’t know that and this is a perfect way for people to test that out.

T-Mobile Test Drive

In addition to the T-Mobile 7 Day Test Drive, they also announced that they would be further accelerating their rollout of VoLTE and the initial roll-out of Wideband LTE which is just 15 MHz+15 MHz carrier aggregation feature that should allow speeds in excess of 100 Mbps. T-Mobile has tested speeds that nearly read 150 Mbps, but unfortunately for my market T-Mobile is limiting users to 40 Mbps, which makes it a bit difficult to use any sort of Wideband features, even if my phone’s cellular modem supports it. Currently, 16 of T-Mobile’s markets have enough spectrum to be able to support 15 MHz + 15 MHz carrier aggregation and they will rapidly continue to roll this out as they continue to update their network. It is nice to see the carriers finally supporting carrier aggregation as devices like the recently announced Samsung Galaxy S5 LTE-A will make good use of the network’s carrier aggregation features.

The below image is a Speedtest that someone took while at the T-Mobile Uncarrier 5.0 event, Myriam Joire, who was able to test with the network that was available inside the venue. We’ve got permission to use this screenshot so that you guys can see for yourselves exactly what kinds of speeds are possible in the near future or right now depending on where you live (see the list above).

Carrier Aggregation – Image courtesy of @Tnkgrl (Myriam Joire)

There were also a recent set of nationwide speed tests of networks across the country and T-Mobile came in first or second in many of them, including PCMag’s own which found T-Mobile almost on par with Verizon, who charges significantly more and has much less pro-consumer policies. And if you look at the tested speeds below, in the San Diego test you can see that T-Mobile had the best average speeds in all tests which really is what matters most when you talk about network speeds since the average is what you will usually see, as opposed to the top speed or slowest speed. However, in San Diego, T-Mobile is also limiting users to 40 Mbps (as I have been complaining about) and can now confirm that PCMag also had the same experience that I have.

In addition to their accelerated LTE Wideband roll-out, T-Mobile is also rolling out more of their Voice over LTE (VoLTE). T-Mobile is looking to beat their competitors to the punch with their HD voice/VoLTE features that would enable you to have very high quality voice in addition to sharing that signal over your data connection, reducing the amount of radios that have to stay on while a phone is connected to the network. The significantly improved audio will only be available on certain devices, but since T-Mobile announced their VoLTE roll-out they have already launched VoLTE in 15 markets and are expecting to launch nationwide by the end of the year.

Seattle, WA
Washington, D.C

In addition to the network improvements and the 7 Day Test Drive, T-Mobile made a pretty significant announcement which they call Uncarrier 6.0 by ‘setting your music free’. Essentially, what T-Mobile is doing is that they are no longer counting music streaming against your monthly data plan if you don’t have an unlimited data plan. The apps that T-Mobile currently will not count towards your monthly data plan usage are: Pandora, Rhapsody, iHeartRadio, iTunes Radio, Slacker, and Spotify. On top of that, T-Mobile will allow users to vote for music streaming apps that aren’t currently included, which will likely add Google Play Music which oddly isn’t included on T-Mobile’s list of ‘approved’ apps. This is a pretty significant move for T-Mobile to make because a lot of people’s data plans get used up quite a bit by music streaming applications, especially Spotify when you use the high quality feature which can chew up a gigabyte a month or more of data on its own.

Overall, all of these developments are welcome ones by consumers, but there are some problems with T-Mobile’s music streaming pertaining to Net Neutrality that we’ll be addressing in another article.

So, everyone’s been eagerly awaiting Amazon’s Fire Phone for many months, that includes the rumors that they were shopping around for hardware partners as well as possibly launching with AT&T, which we now know as true. There were countless rumors stating that Amazon would build a 3D-capable phone, likely leaked by none other than Amazon. Even though we repeatedly stated that it would likely not be a 3D display but rather a 3D-like effect that you can find with HTC’s One M8 3D parallax effect using the phone’s accelerometer and gyroscope to help the GPU render based on the person’s perspective.

Amazon Fire Phone Maps

The phone is jam packed with lots of software features that some might consider bloatware or fluff. First we have the aforementioned 3D-effects, then you have the web browser scrolling using the tilt of the phone. With the use of their Firefly feature, Amazon will get an ever more detailed picture of what their consumers are doing on a daily basis and can create a media consumption picture of that person. Additionally, the Fire Phone effectively functions as a very high-end Amazon shopping device with all of the features that it enables through Firefly and other apps. Sure, it has Amazon’s Mayday feature that is supposed to help you with your problems within 30 seconds of pressing the Mayday button, however if you ask anyone that’s had problems with their phones before there’s a very low likelihood that a Mayday button will be reachable if there are any serious issues with the phone. You also have to remember that you are stuck with Amazon’s marketplace, meaning that they are going to be making a pretty significant amount of money off of each and every one of your app purchases, and yes, Google does this as well but Google is not the manufacturer of your phone in most cases but rather the facilitator of the OS and core apps. Amazon is clearly trying to create a full ecosystem with this phone and they want you to pay for it too, unlike they’ve done with their Kindle Fire tablets which have been top-notch (or close to it) hardware for very little money. Just remember that buying this phone means that you don’t have full access to the Google Play store unless you side load it (if they let you).

So, what are we talking about here in terms of phone specs? Nothing really crazy, a 4.7″ display at a measly 1280 x 720 resolution, much like the previous generation HTC One (M7). It also sports a 2.2 GHz Snapdragon SoC with an Adreno 330 GPU, most likely making it a Snapdragon 801 SoC. This would already render this smartphone somewhat outdated because Samsung is preparing to launch their Galaxy S5 Prime (LTE-A) relatively soon with a Snapdragon 805 and we will likely see more Snapdragon 805 devices later this month, according to our sources. It will also have 2GB of RAM, which is already considered on the mid-range for most devices as many Android devices are starting to ship with 3GB and 4GB of RAM on the high-end 0r in tablets. All of this will be powered by a 2400 mAh battery, making it a fairly decent battery life expectation when compared to most other phones, unless that 590 nit brightness on the display will actually negatively impact battery life, which it logically should. It will have a fairly decent 13 MP camera which sports an f/2.0 5-element lens as well as optical image stabilization (OIS) and feature a camera hardware button that is designed to allow the user to go direct to the camera in order to save time in capturing photos. As a backup to the camera, Amazon is also offering unlimited photo backup storage for the Fire Phone so that you don’t have to worry about ever losing your images. The phone sports a dual speaker stereo sound setup as well as Dolby Digital support and unique anti-tangle magnetic headphones to eliminate tangled cables. The standard Fire Phone ships with 32GB of storage so you don’t have to worry about running out of space, even though there is no mention of any microSD external storage support. There is also a 64GB version of the Fire Phone available for an additional $100 on top of the standard price of the phone.

That leads us into the biggest problem about this phone. Amazon’s go-to-market strategy and price. Amazon is pricing this phone at $199 with a 2-year contract on AT&T and will not be making this phone available on any other carriers. Additionally, if you wish not to sign a 2-year contract for this phone, you can always pay the $649 up front (32GB version). The problem with this strategy from Amazon is that they are quite literally building a phone that doesn’t appear to be any more unique than their competitors’ devices but at the same time mines the hell out of their customers’ data like its going out of style. Sure, Google already does quite a bit of this on their own with the Android OS, but Amazon is essentially making you pay $649 for an Amazon shopping device with all of the ‘features’ it has. And yes, for a limited time you will get a year of Amazon Prime for free with the Fire Phone.

Sure, Amazon has released a fairly decent phone in most respects, there’s no denying that. But the choice that Amazon made to go with AT&T and to price it like they have clearly indicates that they believe their brand is strong enough that they can survive on a single carrier and selling their device at the same price as the iPhone 5S, HTC One M8, LG G3 or the Samsung Galaxy S5. Frankly, I know a lot of people that have Kindle Fire tablets and I’m not too sure many of them want a FireOS phone to complement it, nor do they (or I) believe that Amazon’s current offering is strong enough to be priced equally among Apple, Samsung, HTC and LG. Amazon’s ego is clearly bigger than they realize and by having gone to market like they have, they’ve almost certainly doomed themselves to failure. That is, unless AT&T has a significant amount of skin in this game and stands to profit significantly more from any Amazon Fire Phone over all other devices that the sell. Be that through revenue share of device sales or through digital transaction sharing, either way, if a device isn’t available on all carriers the likelihood it will be successful is VERY narrow, with the iPhone being the only exception. And the Amazon Fire Phone is no iPhone.

The phone will be available starting July 25th, an oddly distant way away for a phone launch, seeing as we’re more than a month from that date today.

We don’t normally post iPhone rumors unless they’re incredibly well substantiated and this one appears to be pretty legitimate. While the source of the rumor may be one that seems a bit off-kilter, this person who we are referring to has actually proven themselves in the past to be able to get legitimate iPhone hardware ahead of the launch.

Some images from MacFixit.AU that show the new iPhone 6

There have been countless rumors and leaks and all of the Mac and Apple fan sites will flood you with basically anything they can in order to ensure you click on it. Most of what we’ve seen online as of late has all culminated in Apple launching a larger iPhone. This addresses one of the biggest problems that people have had with the iPhone stating that it is simply too small for most people, causing many to go in search of Android devices with bigger screens. And most of the Android manufacturers have satisfied these needs by launching 5″, 5.5″ and 6″ phones (if you can call them phones past 5″). However, there are still a lot of people that like the small size of the iPhone and how comfortably it fits in their hands (especially if they have smaller hands). So, there is a very strong belief that the iPhone 6 will come in two sizes, one to satisfy the people wanting a bigger screen and another to keep the small phone people happy. There haven’t actually been any rumors that fully substantiate this possibility yet, but it would be a sound business decision on Apple’s part. Almost all of the leaked photos and videos about the new iPhone 6 basically show the newer larger design, which frankly bears a striking resemblance to the HTC One and HTC One M8 both of which we reviewed. Now, there have been a lot of leaks, like we stated earlier but not many of them had a confirming or solid source to verify the look or design, until now. A Taiwanese actor, famous for having shown himself with an iPhone 5C well in advance of the phone’s launch has once again posed with a new Apple iPhone, but this time it’s the iPhone 6 and he’s got it in hand next to an iPhone 5S. Thanks to the website SteveNotes.hk, we’ve got images of Jimmy Lin with the new iPhone 6 along with the iPhone 5S next to it for size.

As you can see from the Weibo image above, the new iPhone 6 (or whatever it’ll be called) is a larger phone than the iPhone 5S and has much more rounded edges which should make it feel much more comfortable in the hand than the somewhat sharp iPhone 5/S. There are also multiple sources claiming that this phone will have a 2K (2560 x 1440 ish) display, even though I’m not sure that this phone is large enough or there is a display small enough to fit in an iPhone and deliver that resolution. Keep in mind that the current iPhone 5S is 1136 x 640 resolution on a 4″ display and a 2K resolution would be more than quadrupling that in terms of pixels if they were to go 2K. The likelihood for that happening is VERY VERY low, so more realistically, we’ll finally see Apple move towards a more standard resolution like 1920 x 1080 or pretty close to it since Apple decided to stay away from 720P with their 1136 x 640 resolution on the iPhone 5.

The expected timeframe for this phone is still fall of this year, likely with a September announcement and an October or late September launch (like last year).

Verizon’s new XLTE service is merely a new branding scheme for the company to promote their new 2×20 MHz AWS band of data service. As of right now, most users are on Verizon’s 700 MHz frequency which is slowly getting overcrowded, so naturally Verizon would want to deploy a second frequency (which they have available). They are doing this by utilizing their 1700 MHz frequency AWS block (similar to what T-Mobile has) in a 2×20 MHz implementation which ultimately results in speeds at or exceeding 80 Mbps. Right now, on Verizon’s 2×10 MHz block in their 700 MHz spectrum block most users are getting around half that, at 40 Mbps or less. Some users are getting more, but not much more.

So, Verizon’s XLTE as of yesterday has launched in a few dozen cities on a handful of devices and you don’t have to do anything other than live in the right city and have the right phone in order to get these faster AWS speeds. We would name the exact cities, but there are literally too many to name in order to not just give you a list of like 50 or 60 cities. The link above will let you know if your city is on Verizon’s XLTE list or not. However, even if you’re in an XLTE area, you will still need to have an XLTE enabled device and those aren’t necessarily that common since they have to be newer devices with the right modems inside. A full list of devices can be found on Verizon’s website.

In terms of smartphones, you have the following phones:

iPhone 5S, LG G2, Nokia Lumia Icon, Samsung Galaxy S5, Droid Mini by Motorola, HTC One M8, Apple iPhone 5C, DROID Maxx by Motorola, Moto X, LG Lucid 3, Samsung Galaxy Note 3, Samsung ATIV SE, HTC One Max, Samsung Galaxy S4, Blackberry Z30 and the Blackberry Q10

if you have a Verizon LTE tablet you need to have the following tablets to have XLTE service:

LG G Pad 8.3 LTE, Apple iPad Air, Apple iPad Mini, Samsung Galaxy tab 2, Samsung Galaxy Note Pro, Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1

And if you have a Verizon hotspot or USB modem you need to have the following devices:
Verizon Jetpack 4G LTE Mobile Hotspot MiFi 5510L, Verizon Jetpack 4G LTE Mobile Hotspot MHS291L and the Verizon 4G LTE USB Modem UML295

While we haven’t had a chance to test these speeds quite yet, we’ll be sure to report back to you relatively soon with our Verizon HTC One M8 (which is capable of XLTE) and since we’re usually between San Diego and San Francisco, both markets are capable of supporting Verizon’s new XLTE service. Do keep in mind, however, that this is not LTE-Advanced, which is the next version of LTE service that is already running in places like Korea where they are able to get speeds in excess of 100 Mbps over commercially available devices. LTE-Advanced brings a whole host of features to smartphones, many of which are already inside of those phones, but the networks are simply not ready for quite yet. We know that Verizon is already working on their LTE-Advanced network and that this is likely a step forward in that direction in order to help them prepare for the jump.

Naturally, as Nokia slowly becomes absorbed into the Microsoft Devices borg, people who worked there for a long time are reconsidering whether or not they are willing to stay with Microsoft. And clearly, some people are not. So, it comes as little surprise that Nokia’s lead lumia camera guy, Ari Partinen, has left Nokia/Microsoft Devices for Apple and today is his last day.

In a series of Tweets, he alluded that he would be moving to Cupertino, and then confirmed that people’s suspicions of his moving to Apple were indeed correct. What this means is that one of Nokia’s best camera guys is going directly to a competitor, and not just that, he’s going to their biggest competitor. A competitor that already has some of the best camera technology in the smartphone industry and is clearly looking to bring themselves on par with what Nokia has offered with the Lumia line, specifically with their Pureview cameras. If you read our Lumia 1020 review, you can clearly see that it is almost as good as a $3000 DLSR with a $1500 lens, which is really no joke.

Ari Partinen – Photo Credit: Ari Partinen and Marko Saari

However, since then, Nokia hasn’t quite really released a phone that has comparable camera quality and capabilities, which is admittedly a bit worrying since the Lumia 1020 came out in early 2013 and Nokia still hasn’t announced or alluded to anything quite yet. And with Nokia’s acquisition by Microsoft, I have a feeling that some projects have been delayed simply because of management and personnel changes, like Ari’s departure. In fact, the photo above of Ari Partinen was taken by Ari and Marko when they worked at Nokia as part of their photoshoot with the Lumia 1020. Hopefully we’ll see more innovative and creative things from people like Ari, assuming that Apple gives him and his team enough resources to properly bump up Apple’s camera game.
