IBM (NYSE: IBM) will not be shedding 100,000 staff as one IBM-watcher reported, the company clarified Monday.

IBM blogger Robert X. Cringely, who follows the company closely and publishes a combination of reporting as well as speculation, wrote last week the company would be laying off 112,000 of its staff — or 26% of its global workforce — in a massive reorganization project to regain profitability.

“The biggest reorganization in IBM history is going to be a nightmare for everyone,” he wrote.

IBM, however, dismissed the numbers presented as “ridiculous” saying that while layoffs would be taking place they would be not nearly as large as Cringely predicted.

A spokesperson for IBM pointed to a charge of $600 million on the company’s most recent earnings report and said this would amount to a “few thousand” people. IBM did not offer further comment on the issue.

IBM has struggled with declining revenue as the company transitions to a software services and cloud provider. It faces increasing competition from more nimble startups in that field. During its most recent earnings report, the company posted its 11th consecutive quarter of decline.

Lisa Su’s first week as the chief executive of AMD (NYSE: AMD) was not an easy one as the company faced “challenging market conditions” and a 2% year-over-year decrease in revenue.

The chipmaker posted third quarter revenue of $1.43 billion, an operating income of $63 million and net income of $17 million. Breaking down the earnings of AMD’s individual units, things get ugly quick. The company’s Computer and Graphics division — seen traditionally as the ‘bread and butter’ of the company — posted revenues of $781m, a 16 per cent year-on-year decline. The division posted an operating loss of $17 million which is more than the $6 million loss it posted in the previous quarter.

The Enterprise, Embedded, and Semi-Custom division, which AMD is putting faith in as the company’s new money maker, posted revenues of $648 million — up 21% from a year ago. The division posted earnings of $108 million, compared to last year’s earnings of $92 million.

But AMD also says the worst is yet to come. The company disclosed that it expects revenues to slide another 10 to 16 per cent in the next quarter, sequentially.

As such, the newly minted CEO Su ordered the company to engage in a restructuring plan (Bright Side of News* reported on this earlier in October) that will see global workforce reductions of 710 employees — or 7% of the company.

“While decisions that impact the size of our global team are never entered into lightly, this is the right step to ensure we prioritize our resources and engineering investments in our highest-priority opportunities that can drive improved profitability and long-term growth,” Su said in a statement regarding the layoffs.

AMD’s stock ended the Thursday trading day at $2.64. Friday’s trading day will likely when traders assess their confidence in Su’s plan to restructure the company.

AMD is once again continuing on the company's path of restructuring with another major reorganization of the company coming later this month.

Our sources are confirming to us that AMD (NASDAQ:AMD) will undergo another major restructuring of the company. This restructuring follows the recent reorganization of the company’s overall organization headed by Dr. Lisa Su and John Byrne. The latest restructuring was announced around the time of Computex and based upon a split of the company into two separate divisions. This restructuring seemed like one merely on paper, shifting over some responsibilities from one person to the other but keeping all divisions and staff intact.

Those two divisions are the Enterprise, Embedded and Semi-Custom Business Group and Computing and Graphics Business Group. As stated before, John Byrne will be responsible for the Computing and Graphics Business Group while Lisa Su will head up the Enterprise, Embedded and Semi-Custom Business Group. Now, the restructuring that is being discussed now (and supposedly already being set in motion) is supposed to be an extension of June’s reorganization/restructuring. This will very likely result in some people changing their roles within the company as well as some people being laid off, as generally seem to happen with major reorganizations. While there are no definite figures of how many people will be let go, it did not sound like those numbers were massive like the culling of 2009 through 2012.

Unfortunately, there aren’t that many details about exactly how many people could be laid off, but this sounds like a long term plan execution rather than a reactionary cut due to poor earnings. However, there were some indications that this next restructuring would very likely come after AMD’s 3Q 2014 earnings which is on the 16th. It remains to be seen how investors will react to this news, but if AMD has poor earnings for 3Q 2014, it may be seen as a reactionary restructuring rather than a planned one which is how it was interpreted by our sources. We are labeling this as a rumor because it isn’t an official announcement, however this is essentially already a done deal.

As Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) reaches the halfway point in its plan to cut 21,000 jobs, one of the victims of CEO Satya Nadella’s plan for a “leaner, smarter Microsoft” is the company’s esteemed Silicon Valley research group.

According to reports — confirmed by tweets from the group’s employees — the 75-person lab will close and 50 positions will be eliminated. The remaining staff will be given the option to continue working for the company from Microsoft’s nearby Mountain View office. The focus of the lab prior to its close was distributed computing, and developing software to coordinate computing tasks across a network of machines. In 2013 the lab was honored with the 2013 A.M Turing award for its work on the Paxos algorithm, which aids in the redundancy of computer networks by re-routing packs and re-assigning tasks in the event of cascading communication failure.

These layoffs are part of a broader round of 2,100 layoffs that were announced Thursday. While the last round of layoffs were primarily focused on staff that joined Microsoft from Nokia, this round of layoffs isn’t concentrated in a particular geographical division or business unit. According to a blog post by Microsoft, 747 of the employees were from the company’s headquarters Washington, while another 160 were from locations around California.

“We will continue to go through this process in the most thoughtful manner possible, with the deepest respect for affected individuals and recognition of their service to the company. We will offer severance to all affected employees,” a company spokesperson said in a public statement.

According to Nadella, the broader plan is to reduce Microsoft’s headcount by 18,000 altogether. The next round of layoffs will occur in July 2015 when the company plans to eliminate 2,900 jobs.
