Synology has launched new 5-bay and 8-bay NAS systems aimed at small and medium businesses. The DS1515+ and DS1815+ feature a host of enhancements that include double the number of Ethernet ports, allowing them to hit read speeds in excess of 450MB/s.

While the exterior design has remained unchanged, the DS1515+ and DS1815+ now include Intel’s latest Atom SoC, the 2.4 GHz quad-core C2538, which brings the AES-NI hardware encryption to the platform. The RAM is at 2GB, which can be extended by a further 6GB via two memory slots.

The drive capacity is 30TB for the DS1515+ and 48TB for the DS1815+, although the ability to expand storage through Synology’s eSATA-based DX513 expansion unit means that you can extend overall storage to 90TB for the 5-bay NAS and 108TB for the DS1815+. The four Gigabit LAN ports feature Link Aggregation and are optimized for minimizing failover downtimes.

The addition of new LAN ports is geared at allowing simultaneous connections to the NAS and increasing bandwidth, with Synology quoting 390MB/s for the DS1515+ and 420MB/s for the DS1815+. There are also four USB 3.0 ports at the back for transferring data to an external hard drive. Synology is rolling out its High Availability feature, through which you can configure two NAS units to mirror data among them. One NAS acts as the active server, and the other is a passive system that will kick in if there’s an issue with the active NAS.

Being Plus variants, the DiskStations feature additional options that are not available to regular DiskStation users, which include virtualization environments like VMware, Citrix and Microsoft Hyper-V. Other SMB-oriented utilities include an integrated mail server, central management console for administrators along with Windows AD, LDAP, and Domain Trust. Synology also offers tools for securing and backing up data automatically.

The DS1515+ and DS1815+ are now available globally.

Synology’s four-bay NAS units are very well-received by SOHO users, and today the hardware vendor is launching its more powerful NAS thus far in the DiskStation DS415+. The DS415+ retains a similar style as other four-bay solutions Synology has offered over the course of the last year, but it is under the hood where you’ll find most of the changes.

The DiskStation DS415+ comes with a 2.4 GHz quad-core Intel Atom CPU, which is a noticeable step up from the DS412+, which offered a 2.1 GHz dual-core Atom CPU. It is great to see Synology move away from the Armada line of CPUs from Marvell and start offering Intel’s Atom CPUs in its products. The amount of RAM has similarly received a boost, with the DS415+ featuring 2 GB DDR3 memory. Thanks to the new hardware, Synology is claiming that the DiskStation DS415+ can achieve read speeds in the vicinity of 228MB/s and can write speeds of 233MB/s, which are considerably more than what previous generation models managed. The DS415+ is also the first Synology product to include the AES-NI encryption service.

Other hardware is similar to what you get with the DS412+, which includes two USB 3.0 ports, one USB 2.0 port, one eSATA port, two Gigabit LAN ports that can be bridged through Link Aggregation and four drive bays that can accommodate a total of 24 TB. The DiskStation Ds415+ also features intelligent power utilization, with the unit only consuming 17.3 watts during hibernation. When running full tilt, the NAS requires 46.2 watts.

Along with the introduction of the DiskStation DS415+, Synology is also rolling out a beta version of its operating system, DiskStation Manager (DSM) 5.1. The new version brings a tweaked user interface as well as a new set of features. Since the DS415+ is a model in the professional series, it features additional utilities that allow you to run web servers, host websites as well as connect to virtual servers from VMware, Citrix and others.

In the UK, the DS415+ costs around $760 (£470). There isn’t any information as to how much the NAS will be available for in the US, but if it anything in the $600 range, the DS415+ will be a worthy upgrade for most Synology users.
