Xiaomi’s Chief Executive Lei Jun (雷軍) said on Jan. 13 that his company will aim at becoming the leader in the global smartphone market within five to 10 years.

“Maybe our opponents will mock us for this, as we dream big. But a dream is not a dream if it does not sound impossible before we make it,” Lei said.

The founder for Xiaomi made his remarks when he attended the cross-Taiwan Strait Mobile Internet Conference in Taipei. Lei said that Taiwan’s former vice president Vincent Siew (蕭萬長) requested him to encourage Taiwan’s younger generation during their conversations. He believed that age does not matter when it comes to establish new business but attitude does, while “dreaming big” is an important issue for those who want to start business from nothing.

Lei quoted Alibaba’s (NYSE: BABA) founder Jack Ma’s (馬雲) remarks and said “a man like me failed college entrance exams for three times and, probably anybody can achieve something great if I can.”

“Xiaomi’s history is shorter than five years, while our smartphone has been introduced for only three years. But now, Xiaomi is the leader in the smartphone market in China and became the third brand name in the global market during the third quarter last year. We have accomplished something that we did not believe in the past,” Lei said.

In the meantime, Lei urged Taiwanese innovators to accelerate their development of intelligence-based home applications. He also laid out the directions he felt will be appropriate for Taiwanese start-up companies and young innovators for next five to 10 years – to create mobile apps that will go on sale globally through online stores like Google Play and App Store and to come up with more “smart home” applications.

“Mobile apps will expand the reach of Taiwanese firms from the domestic market to other regions around the world, and ‘smart home’ applications are ‘using mobile phones as a hub to connect with all intelligence-based equipment,’ including devices used at home and in the office,” Lei said.

Lei suggested that Taiwanese companies have been lagging behind their Chinese competitors in the development of smart home applications.

“I think many Taiwanese companies are capable for innovation like that but they must speed up to keep up with the competition,” he said.

“The worldwide automotive-use LED market is projected to reach US$2.5 billion by 2018, with a compounded growth rate of 9% from the period between 2014 and 2018,” Lu said. “In particular the automotive LED market value in before market is projected to reach US$1.9 billion and the automotive LED market value in after market is also forecasted to reach US$620 million.”

Quoting the latest research, Lu said that LED automotive lighting has a relatively higher gross margin, compared with other traditional LED applications, that also attracted many Taiwanese LED makers to start planning to enter the field of manufacturing car-use LED equipment.

Also, with the growing demand for GPS, dashboard and other panels to be used on vehicles, LEDinside forecasted that the LED market for car-use equipment will also grow from US$71 million in 2014 to US$130 million by 2018.

“In 2014, worldwide new vehicles with standard equipment included car-use panels, have already reached 9%, and is expected to hit 14% by 2018,” Lu said.

In this industry, the rule of “second generation” is the one that always work. And if you’re lucky, you’ll continue the sales tradition for 2-3 generations, if your competitor does not make “1-2″.
In case of ATI, the company struck gold with Radeon 9700 (R300 GPU), but the company sold 9800 and X800 like hotcakes. Nvidia came out with GeForce 6800 at X800 time and didn’t achieve the success the company expected, but 7800, 7900 and 8800 scored majorly. ATI came out with 3800 and did rather well, but GeForce 9000 outsold ATI parts. Now with Radeon 4000 series, AMD/ATI scored big with the “second generation” rule. And it didn’t stop there – AMD offered the same generation hardware to low-end, mainstream and high-end, while Nvidia royally screwed up themselves with no GT200 variants coming in $199 and $99 bracket.
For the first time in years, Nvidia did not release same-generation low-end/mainstream parts (remember GeForce 6600, 7600, 8600, 9600?) and that move is now costing them dearly.
According to my short-term boss, Jon Peddie at Jon Peddie Research, Q3’08 was market with big victory for guys from Markham, Marlborough and Santa Clara.
In Q3’08, a grand total of 111 million GPUs were shipped, 21 million (22.5% jump) more than in Q3 of last year and 18% gain from Q2’08. It proves that Windows Vista still generated the “thirsty for graphics” sales effect both Nvidia and ATI preached about. If you recall, Microsoft stopped legal sales of Windows XP end of June, and vast majority of computers shipped in Q3 had “real” graphics.
Overall, Intel now has 49.4% of the market. AMD grew to 20.6%, while Nvidia lost couple percents and now has 27.8%. JPR analysis also proved that notebooks are also on the way to overtake desktop sales, since they make for 49.4M of 111M overall sales.

BTW, don’t believe recession talk. Both Intel and AMD scored big results while Wall Street melted, and I would expect that strong sales will continue in Q4. Because when times are tough, people will stay inside house and play games, watch movies etc. No better time than to buy a new graphics chip.
