Although the Halo 5: Guardians beta is scheduled to go live tomorrow, Xbox One gamers are already able to start download process in preparation of the big event.

To get your installation underway just fire up the Halo: Master Chief Collection, navigate to the Extras section on the Main Menu, and select the Halo 5 Beta section. Since the beta download clocks in at 10.26 GB of data, it’s a good idea to let your console sit for a bit.

Just don’t get too excited when the download finishes, as 343 isn’t starting up the servers until tomorrow morning.

Remember to watch 343i’s live action Halo: Nightfall series to get in-game extras for the beta, including an exclusive armor set straight from the series.

If the episodes don’t grab your fancy, you can always fast-forward through and collect your unlockables. But you should watch them, and also check out the second stories, which add some very real depth to the franchise and give you key insights on Agent Locke’s character.

If you can’t watch Nightfall be sure to redeem the code included in the Master Chief Collection. If you’re digital, try backing out of the game a few times, resetting your console, or checking your e-mail inbox; chances are Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) e-mailed you a code.

Some gamers are also reporting that they’ve had to “force quit” out of the Master Chief Collection in order for the beta pane to pop up. Basically you’ll want to hit the Xbox button to return to the main console screen, hit the Guide button, and select quit.

A bit ago, Halo 5‘s Studio Head Josh Holmes informed eager Spartans that they’d be able to pre-download the beta to ensure smooth entry when the servers went live around 9AM PST on December 29.

If you weren’t able to get into the limited preview alpha reserved for Xbox Preview members, there are a few things you can do to prep for the beta. Be sure to become familiar with Halo 5‘s new Spartan abilities, and check out some gameplay footage to get the flow of battle.

Overall the beta looks like it incorporates a new arena-based style for competitive multiplayer, and coupled with the new abilities like Smart Scope, Sprint and Thrust, combat should be quite dynamic and interesting.

For in-depth discussions and questions, drop by the Halo Reddit, as you’ll likely meet a bunch of new like-minded players who are just as excited as you are to play the beta.

The Halo 5: Guardians beta kicks off tomorrow, Dec. 29 at 9AM PST and will last until Jan. 18, 2015.

Halo: Combat Evolved has been added to The Master Chief Collection‘s multiplayer lineup, 343 Industries has announced.

In a new post on Halo Waypoint, 343i reveals that the dedicated Halo: CE playlist has arrived on MCC‘s matchmaking lists.

The new mode includes a mix of slayer and objective gametypes, and contains almost every multiplayer map included in the original, with the exception of the excellent CTF map Blood Gulch.

Oddly enough the studio says the Halo: CE playlist is optimized for 2v2 action.

“We have updated the Matchmaking playlist lineup to include Halo: CE. The playlist is now available. As we mentioned before launch, the Halo: CE playlist will be premiering at 2v2 based on community feedback.”

The new playlist includes eight multiplayer maps from Halo: CE (sans Blood Gulch) and includes CTF, Oddball and Slayer gametypes.

But the in-game multiplayer pane for the new playlist says otherwise, listing the max player count at 8 with gametypes including Slayer, Capture The Flag, and Oddball.

Below we have a breakdown:

Halo: Combat Evolved Matchmaking Playlist

Max Players: 8

Minimum Player Count: 6

Max Party Size: 4

Max Local Players: 4

Team Size: 4

343i originally held the playlist back until the Master Chief Collection could be amended with various updates. Since the game has been patched with a smattering of updates rolled out by the studio, 343i deemed it the right time to bring the classic fragfest action back into play.

The most recent content update was released just two days ago and in the patch notes the studio notes that hit-registration has been tweaked for Halo: Combat Evolved multiplayer.

Many gamers have noticed the awful hit-reg in the game, making it near-unplayable for some, so hopefully this new update rolled out some fixes to ensure the playlist is actually…you know, fun.

Other improvements include tidying up party management and joining (a considerably annoying roadblock that’s kept friends from playing together in both campaign and multiplayer), stability tweaks for campaign playlists, and an array of matchmaking changes.

Microsoft’s (NASDAQ: MSFT) Xbox One console has broken the PlayStation 4’s standing sales streak.

According to Mike Nichols, Corporate Vice President for Xbox’s Marketing division, the Xbox One surpassed the PlayStation 4 in sales in the United States and the U.K. for the month of November.

This marks one of the first times that the all-in-one console interrupted the PS4’s impressive record, and might hint at a comeback for Microsoft.

“November set a new record for sales of Xbox One,” Nichols said in a statement to IGN, “and Xbox One was the best-selling console in the US and UK.” The Xbox exec didn’t provide any concrete sales figures, however.

Although this is a win for Microsoft, it took reducing the Xbox One’s price by $50 in order to move more units. The console’s new $349 price tag is much more attractive to buyers, especially since the system is now bundled with two hit AAA Assassin’s Creed games.

All Xbox One models, including game bundles, were discounted by Microsoft in an effort to bolster sales.

Thanksgiving sales vastly contributed to this milestone, as Black Friday sales saw even more pronounced markdowns from vendors like GameStop who sold the console for as low as $329–and, in some cases, as low as $312. Since the Xbox One will stay at $349 until early January 2015, Microsoft will no-doubt accrue more sales during the main holiday season.

Before the Black Friday rush the Xbox One had seen lackluster sales compared to Sony’s (NYSE: SNE) PlayStation 4, which remains a popular choice across the globe.

Despite growing sales, November’s total game and console sales have slowed down.

The industry analyst firm NPD Group reports that hardware and software sales for November 2014 have dropped by 11 percent as compared to last year’s sales. “Hardware declines totaled $294 million while software declined $17 million or 2 percent,” NPD Group analyst Liam Callahan wrote in the new report (via Joystiq).

Despite its abysmal campaign, Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare dominates November game sales and takes the top spot.

Compared to November 2013, eighth-generation consoles made up 38% of declines for November 2014, but this isn’t so surprising given last year’s respective launches of the Xbox One and PS4.

On the software front Activision’s Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare hit the number one spot, followed up with Rockstar’s new-gen port of Grand Theft Auto V.

Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare

Grand Theft Auto V

Super Smash Bros.

Madden NFL 15

Pokemon Alpha Sapphire

Far Cry 4

Pokemon Omega Ruby

NBA 2K15

Assassin’s Creed: Unity

Halo: The Master Chief Collection

Nintendo’s popular brawler Super Smash Bros. took third place and has fueled growth in Wii U sales, racking up over 700,000 units sold for the platform.

The 3DS port of Super Smash Bros. has overshadowed the Wii U flavor with an estimated 3.67 million global units, cushioning Nintendo amid its financial woes while revitalizing the brand and the Wii U platform. The duo of new Pokemon games has also boosted 3DS handheld sales and has been a tremendous success for the ailing Japanese games maker.

Strangely enough Dragon Age: Inquisition isn’t on the map even though it launched in November. The stunning open-world RPG won Game of the Year at this year’s inaugural The Game Awards 2014, and has been a fan favorite since it was released.

Microsoft has been vague about Xbox One’s total sales, but VG Chartz pinpoints the PS4 has sold over 15 million units globally.

Coming back to the eighth-gen console wars, Microsoft is having a good start, but when the Xbox One goes back up to $399 we’ll likely see sales taper off. The platform doesn’t have very many exclusives and is seriously lacking on the supplemental indie front, which Sony is dominating with its PlayStation Plus subscription model.

The Halo: Master Chief Collection was supposed to augment the smallish selection of games, but thanks to a tremendously broken launch incurred by the thrown-together nature of the game, this attempt failed.

Also the recent PlayStation Experience reminded gamers why they should pick up a PS4, showcasing a huge number of exclusives and upcoming games along with a variety of trailers and on-site panels with developers.

Despite being the second choice, the Xbox One is amazing for media playback and has a number of features not included with the PS4–and Microsoft is committed to add new capabilities via updates.

Hell even the Xbox One’s own one-year birthday party was severely eclipsed by Sony’s own 20th anniversary celebration, which kicked off a new special edition 20th Anniversary PlayStation 4.

To celebrate one year of its all-in-one console Microsoft offered a few paltry extras to Xbox LIVE members, which were nothing more than token “thank yous” for sticking with the brand. You got to try out Sunset Overdrive for 24 hours (the best part) along with two limited movie rentals, a gamer picture, and, if you were an early adopter who paid full price for your Xbox One, you got a special background image.

This was a genuine opportunity for Microsoft to actually make its mark, but instead they dropped the ball and ultimately were overshadowed once again by Sony.

In any case, in order to solidify long-lasting competition Microsoft will need to further its games campaign to once again catch up with Sony.

The Redmond-based tech giant might have caught up with the Japanese console maker in terms of one-month sales, but the gap is still very pronounced, and the company still has a lot of work ahead if it wants to turn the tables.

On the hardware front, Amazon is offering a free game with every PlayStation 4 purchase, although the games are from a limited pre-selected group and are downloadable codes. The promo reads as follows: “buy a PlayStation 4, and receive a code redeemable for a free digital game download”. The deal expires on Jan. 3, 2015

The promotion honors your choice out of LittleBigPlanet 3, Destiny, NBA 2K15 and Far Cry 4, and Amazon affirms that the code will be sent by e-mail “upon completion of your shipment”.

You can also get $30 off on a Borderlands 2 PlayStation Vita bundle ($169.99) over at the ‘Zon, and 44% off on a PS Vita 16GB memory card ($33.33) to ensure your new Vita handheld has enough memory. 32GB and 64GB variants are also discounted by over 30%.

BestBuy has a sale on a Nintendo 3DS XL for just $149.99, available in blue, red and black flavors. This is only for the handheld itself and includes no games; the bundle isn’t discounted, sadly.

With this year’s Black Friday sales over and gone, we should see some more mark downs but it’s fair to say that most consumers have their Christmas and holiday shopping almost finished. You can never tell when sales will pop up, and it’s great to see that Dragon Age: Inquisition, one of the best games of the year, available for so cheap. Most of us who picked it up for $64 are “aww’ing”, but we’ve had our own headstart in the game.

Thanks, Gamespot.

Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) now supports Bitcoin as a payment option for its digital store, allowing users to fund their accounts with the cryptocurrency.

In a surprising move, the Redmond-based tech giant Microsoft has become the first major console maker to embrace the virtual currency known as Bitcoin, letting users add money to their Microsoft accounts via the virtual currency. Ouya, the failed Android console, added Bitcoin support some time ago.

But how does it work? Essentially the Bitcoins are “cashed in” from the user’s digital wallet and then converted into money, which is then added to the user’s balance.

The news was originally spotted on Reddit, and it appears that the funds are limited to Xbox credit. That means you can buy “apps, games, and other digital content from Windows, Windows Phone, Xbox Games, Xbox Music, or Xbox Video stores”.

Microsoft has added a detailed how-to section that has more information on the stipulations and process of the new payment feature.

According to the article, users can only use their Bitcoin funds to buy “digital goods at select Microsoft online stores”, and that you can’t use Bitcoin to “purchase Microsoft products and services directly at this time”.

So far only users in the United States can take advantage of this payment option, but we’ll likely see Microsoft add more territories as well as full Bitcoin support across all stores.

It’ll be interesting to see if Sony (NYSE: SNE) or Nintendo (TYO: 7974) adopt Bitcoin for their respective online marketplaces, and as the digital currency continues to grow in popularity and value, we’ll likely see more major retailers honor the cryptocurrency same as cash.

Thanks, Eurogamer.

The upcoming beta for Halo 5: Guardians will weigh a little over 10GB, reports have indicated.

This news comes from a sharp-eyed Redditor with the handle AJSwain who spotted a listing for the beta on his Xbox One console.

Halo 5 isn’t listed anywhere on the Xbox One’s Xbox Games Store, and cursory searches just loop users to the Master Chief Collection store page. But other Reddit users have reported that they’ve accessed this very same listing via the Extras section in the Master Chief Collection.

Within this section the Halo 5 beta has its own tab, and oddly enough it has become briefly active for some users, although they weren’t able to download anything.

According to the screen-cap, the beta’s install size clocks in at approximately 10.27 GB. It’s also worth mentioning that this size could change in the coming weeks.

The listing says some interesting things, revealing that players will be able to unlock “exclusive gear” via the interactive original series Halo: Nightfall as well as in the recently released Halo: MCC.

“Gear up for the Guardians beta by unlocking exclusive content in The Master Chief Collection and Halo: Nightfall. These exclusive items will carry over to Halo 5: Guardians.“

Also the 12/4/2014 release date is a placeholder, as we all know the beta will launch on Dec. 29 and run until Jan. 18, 2015.

In other Halo 5 news, Ready Up Live has released a huge hour-long gameplay video that showcases the game’s dynamic multiplayer in action. The footage showcases the game’s new Spartan abilities like Charge, Clamber, Slide and Smart Scope while shedding light on weapons and maps.

You can read more about Halo 5‘s Spartan abilities here.

So far the Guardians beta looks impressive, but gamers are dubious thanks to the Master Chief Collection‘s continued struggle with matchmaking. 343i actually released a new update today that aims to refine online matches, but the game is far from fixed, and is missing many of its online gametypes.

343 Industries recently apologized for the state of the game, and they’ve launched a slew of updates to help refine the game’s broken state.

Hopefully the team is able to focus on both the beta test as well as the Master Chief Collection, as beta access was a major perk in buying the Xbox One exclusive.

The next version of Windows won’t be unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show in January, but rather at a later press event.

While Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) already gave the world an official first look at its next operating system earlier this fall, the unveiling event in San Francisco was decidedly small and low key. According to a report, the operating system’s “real unveiling” — where consumer features will be revealed in full — will occur in late January.

A source within Microsoft that spoke with The Verge said that the company is planning a press event in January where executives will demonstrate a consumer preview of the new operating system. Reportedly, Microsoft will also demonstrate the operating system on other platforms such as phones, tablets and the Xbox One. Microsoft will also demonstrate the operating system’s new touch platform called Continuum too.

The choice to put Windows 10 on stage at a press event in late January, and not at the Consumer Electronics Show, is an interesting yet understandable one. A trend over the past few years is for vendors to show off their big announcements for the year — and Windows 10 is certainly Microsoft’s — at press events outside of the big tent of CES. It’s far too noisy and chaotic for vendors to get adequate attention, which means that important launches are scheduled for press events outside of the time CES occupies.

Thinking of going digital for next-gen games? You might want to think again.

The post The Problem With Digital Downloads on the Xbox One And PS4 appeared first on VR World.

Sony (NYSE: SNE) and Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) have a very big problem with digital downloading on their next-gen consoles.

Both the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One suffer from some of the most ill-designed handling of digital content in any generation of gaming, making what was once a convenient feature into a troublesome waiting game.

Instead of being straightforward and streamlined, downloading a full game on next-gen systems is awkward, clunky and utilizes some very nasty underhanded tactics. Often gamers are surprised mid-game by having their session interrupted because their download hasn’t finished, or spend hours upon hours staring at a barely moving progress bar on a home screen.

First let’s take a look at how the PlayStation 4 handles digital downloads.

Play as you download: Crutch or convenience?

Usually PS4 games will be bigger than Xbox One games — Dragon Age: Inquisition clocks in at 44.28 GB on PS4 and 41GB on Xbox One — and as we all know, a bigger game means more waiting. The sheer size of next-gen games like Wolfenstein: The New Order‘s 51GB’s is the main reason to stay away from digital, as you’ll be spending a lot of time waiting for the downloads to complete.

There’s nothing more frustrating than spending the same amount of money and then having to wait half a day to play your game.

It’s also important to remember that having an ultra-fast internet connection doesn’t always translate to super-fast downloads.

Digital games are hosted on Sony’s PlayStation Network servers, which control the maximum bandwidth — that is the transfer rates of the downloads themselves — capping your download speeds by default. So in essence your speed does come into play, but it can’t top the designated cap set by Sony’s servers.

In my experience the PlayStation Network is quite bad. The downloads have taken needlessly long -- Wolfenstein, for example, took most of a day and a night to complete — and it’s something that will vary from person-to-person, but all-in-all Sony doesn’t have a very optimized network environment.

The main problem with the PS4’s digital downloads isn’t the speeds, however: it’s the play-as-you-download feature.

Play-as-you-download was meant to be a huge innovation for digital gamers. But as we’ve seen in the past, Sony’s big ideas are often handled badly in terms of actual execution, and this is certain the case here. The big frustration is that the PS4 only shows you the minimum required download to play as soon as possible–in other words, it shows you how little you need to download in order to jump right in the game.

But it doesn’t tell you the actual full download size.

Instead of being upfront and just informing gamers that there’s about 40GB left to go, it lets you jump right in and start playing. Little do you know that you only have about 10% or so of the game on your console; it tricks you into thinking the full game is ready to go.

Shortly enough you’ll be met with an error prompt that interrupts your game by informing you that the game isn’t done downloading. Huh. So you check the Notifications–> Downloads section, but there’s nothing there.

This is where things get really underhanded. You actually have to navigate to the main PS4 menu and check Settings –> Application Saved Data Management –> and then check the game in the listing. Only then will you see what you’ve actually downloaded.

So not only does the PS4 make you believe you’ve got the full game by letting you play, but it doesn’t even tell you how much you’ve downloaded. You have to prod through menus and search in tedious trial-and-error methods just to get the information you want.

Why can’t the PS4 just tell you both the play-as-you-download install as well as the full game install? Why do gamers have to jump through hoops? Oddly enough the new system update patches haven’t addressed this at all, and it still is a sort of “hidden” feature that irks gamers.

The physical install speeds are incredibly fast. You only need to stick the disc in and you’ll be playing in no less than 3 minutes or so — sometimes it takes as little as one minute — with the full game zipped right onto your hard-drive. No hassle, no mess, just gaming.

UPDATE: As part of the console’s first-year anniversary, Microsoft is letting Xbox LIVE Gold users on Xbox One try out the exclusive Sunset Overdrive for free for 24 hours starting Saturday, Nov. 22. The game itself is one of the most fun-filled excursions I’ve played in recent years and is a reminder that wacky chaos still has a big place in video games.

Microsoft affirms that all achievements can be unlocked and kept, and your progress will carry over to the full game should you decided to pick it up in the future. Be sure to give it a shot if you can, I highly recommend it.

Original story is as follows.

The Xbox One is about to turn a year old, and to celebrate Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) is hosting a sort of reverse-birthday ceremony where it’ll hand out some free gifts to gamers.

“It’s been an unbelievable year, but we never would have gotten to this point without our incredible fans,” Xbox spokesman Larry Hyrb aka Major Nelson said in a recent blog post.

“We want to thank you for being a part of an amazing 12 months by celebrating with you all weekend long.”

The goodies include a special Year One gamer picture and console background to mark the occasion, and a free (but limited) rental of the acclaimed live-action 2012 mini-series Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn.

North American users will also get a free rental of the newest Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods movie along with a “sampler pack” of episodes from the Dragon Ball Z TV series.

But there’s some strings attached: to be eligible for the gifts you’ll need to have picked up an Xbox One between the original launch on Nov. 22, 2013 and Nov. 11, 2014, and you need to have at least 10 hours of playtime logged on the system.

Microsoft is also taking the festivities up a notch by handing out some great presents to random Xbox One users, ranging from an Xbox One Sunset Overdrive bundle to some GTA V swag and a full year of Xbox LIVE Gold.

The default gifts aren’t anything really substantial, but Microsoft’s sentiments are in the right spot.

Battle of the Gods isn’t really anything to get excited about, and we’ve all pretty much seen Forward Unto Dawn already, but the DBZ sample pack should give you a nice refresher in the subtle art of kamehamehas.

Major Nelson confirms that the gifts will be sent out via email codes, so be sure to check your inboxes over the weekend. Once you see them you’ll want to redeem them right away, as it’s likely the codes you receive will expire soon.

As a reminder, Microsoft has cut the Xbox One’s price tag down to $349 for the holidays, including a discount on all special edition bundles including the Assassin’s Creed: Unity bundle.

343 Industries is just as much aware of the new Halo ports’ abysmal matchmaking as gamers are, and they’re currently working on a fix.

Since its release last week, the Halo: Master Chief Collection has been plagued with uncompromisingly bad matchmaking, treating players to errors, bugs, uneven teams, incredibly long search times, and a retinue of other irksome roadblocks.

Luckily 343i is on the case. Dan Ayoub, Executive Producer for 343i, addressed the problems head-on and gave an update that players can expect the first batch of content fixes as early as Wednesday, November 19.

“Looking at our data logs, server-side adjustments that we have made over the past 24 hours have shown a 20% increase in server connectivity,” Ayoub said in a new Halo Waypoint post. “However, we are well aware that performance is not where it needs to be.”

But it won’t be as simple as few hotfixes; the dev team will need to roll out full game updates to root out the issues. Ayoub confirms that these updates are working, but they still need some time to refine and test out the changes.

“Resolving Matchmaking issues also requires client-side fixes, which require a content update.

“The client side update, which focuses on Matchmaking performance, non-matchmaking bugs, and a variety of title-specific issues, has been completed and is going through testing and certification.”

In its current state multiplayer is unplayable, and is a stain on Halo‘s stalwart PvP experience. Overall the game seems like it wasn’t extensively tested and rushed into stores, a trend we’ve been seeing too much of lately.

It’s interesting to wonder how optimized the Master Chief Collection might have been if they weren’t so deadset on Halo 5: Guardians. Furthermore with 343i having to pick up the slack for Halo: MCC, the impending Halo 5 beta might suffer as a result.

Hopefully 343i can get its affairs in order before Dec. 29 rolls around, as gamers have been looking forward to the Halo 5 beta for months now.

With the hectic craziness of Black Friday around the corner, shopper’s are readying their lists and checking them twice. Most of the really good deals are the dreaded doorbusters, meaning you’ll have to camp outside the store for a good while the day after Thanksgiving.

But some retailers like H.H. Gregg are offering pre-Black Friday sales that let you bypass the rush by picking up goodies online.

With H.H. Gregg’s Black Friday Overnight Sale you can pick up an Assassin’s Creed: Unity Xbox One bundle for just $312 using the online promo code OVERNIGHT11.

The code discounts all items $299 and up by 11% and even throws in free shipping to boot.

This discount applies to the retailer’s entire stock, provided it’s at least $299. You can also nab a limited edition Destiny PlayStation 4 bundled with The Last of Us: Remastered for only $444 compared to its $499 retail, or the basic PS4 for just $355.

Drop by the site and do some browsing to pick the bundle that’s right for you–the store has a variety to choose from, including an NBA 2K15 bundle that includes a year of PlayStation Plus as well as the limited edition Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare Xbox One bundle.

Be sure to jump on this deal ASAP, as it’ll most likely sell out like hotcakes. The cheapest price we’ve seen so far on the Xbox One is Target’s doorbuster $329 AC: Unity bundle that comes with a $50 gift card, but of course you’ll have to wait in line for quite some time.

As someone who’s waited outside of Target for eight hours to snag a 50” HDTV, I advise just opting for online shopping instead. Things get crazy out there.

Thanks, Cheap Ass Gamer and Destructoid.

These days, tablets are offered in several sizes and configurations that cost anywhere between $150 and $2,000. With such a wide variety of devices, it is easy to find one that suits your needs. These are the best tablets of 2014:

Nvidia Shield tablet

Nvidia’s (NASDAQ:NVDA) Shield tablet is its second foray into the world of portable devices after the Shield handheld, and this time around Nvidia is looking to attract a wider audience. The Shield is targeted at users looking to play games on their tablet (a burgeoning segment thanks to the availability of visually striking games on mobile), and the hardware under the hood highlights the tablet’s pedigree: The Shield comes with Nvidia’s Tegra K1 chip with a 192 core GPU that can hold its own against anything in the world of mobile GPUs. The CPU features four Cortex A15 cores clocked at 2.2 GHz.

The 8-inch form factor tablet comes with a screen resolution of 1920 x 1200, which means a pixel density of 283 ppi. Also included is 2GB RAM, 5 MP front and back cameras, Wi-Fi 802.11 ac connectivity and Bluetooth 4.0 LE. The frontal stereo speakers look similar to what HTC (TPE:2498) offers in the One M7, and they deliver where it matters; with sound coming out crisp and clear. Also available with the tablet is a DirectStylus 2 stylus that allows you to take notes on the tablet among other things.

This being a gaming-oriented slate, Nvidia is rolling out what it is calling Shield-optimized titles that are tweaked for the tablet. The list of games is continually growing as Nvidia brings more publishers on-board. Nvidia also recently announced its GRID service, which allows Shield users to access 20 blockbuster titles for free. It is clear that Nvidia is looking to build an ecosystem of content around the Shield tablet, which is encouraging. Users with a GeForce GTX card can also utilize Nvidia’s GameStream technology to stream games to the Shield tablet. The tablet is set to receive the latest version of Android this month, which will bring a whole host of new features.

The Shield tablet is available for $299, which is the 16GB Wi-Fi only model. The 32GB version, which also features LTE connectivity, is available for $399. For consumers looking for a more affordable solution to the Shield, Xiaomi’s Mi Pad offers the same hardware in a distinctly iPad-esque design for around $199. While Xiaomi’s offering may be marginally more affordable, it lacks the Nvidia-specific utilities included in the Shield.

HTC Nexus 9

The wait for a larger tablet in the Nexus series is over, with Google (NASDAQ:GOOGL) deciding to go with HTC this time around. The motive for doing so was to not give preference to one vendor over others, which is great as consumers get to benefit from different design philosophies. The Nexus 9 is being billed as a premium tablet, and is positioned closer to the high-end segment. The 16GB Wi-Fi only version costs $399, with the 32GB model available for $499. There’s a 32GB variant that offers LTE connectivity, which will retail later this year for $599.

The pricing for the tablet is justified considering the hardware it features. The Nexus 9 comes with an 8.9-inch IPS LCD screen that offers a resolution of 2048 x 1536 in a 4:3 that is more reminiscent of the iPad that an Android tablet. The tablet comes with a coating of Gorilla Glass 3 that offers a layer of resistance to scratches. Under the hood, there’s a 64-bit NVIDIA Tegra K1 chip that features the 64-bit Denver CPU clocked at 2.3 GHz along with a 192 core GPU. At this stage, the inclusion of a 64-bit CPU is more future proofing than anything, and the weird 4:3 ratio means that certain utilities do not scale as well (for good reason). The 2GB of RAM may be a bit of a concern for some, and while the tablet can currently handle anything available in the world of Android with ease, memory may become the bottleneck in the future.

Other specs include an 8 MP camera at the back, 1.6 MP front shooter, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac connectivity, Bluetooth 4.1 LE, A2DP, apt-X and microUSB 2.0. The Nexus 9 comes with a 6,700 mAh battery and is available in three color variants: Indigo Black, Lunar White and Sand. One of the more interesting features of the tablet is the frontal speakers. These are not stereo BoomSound speakers like the ones on the One M8, but they still provide a much better sound that what is considered common in this segment.

In terms of build quality, the Nexus 9 loses points as it just isn’t near the level of what other tablets in this category cost. There is a lot of flex, particularly at the back of the tablet, when you press down on it. There also seem to be issues with build quality as a whole, which is not too dissimilar to what we’ve seen when Asus launched the Nexus 7 2013 last year. These issues were resolved within a month, but if you are buying the Nexus 9 as soon as it launches in your territory, be sure to check the device for build quality issues.

Apple iPad Air

Sure, the new iPad Air 2 comes with the faster A8X SoC, which as it turns out, comes with a semi-custom GPU along with the custom CPU design in the “Cyclone” architecture. The new processor has visible gains when playing games, but that doesn’t mean that last year’s iPad Air is obsolete. Far from it, and aside from the lack of Touch ID, there isn’t much to differentiate between this year’s tablet and last year’s offering. Combine that with the fact that the original iPad Air is now available for a discount, and the tablet from 2013 sounds like a much more enticing prospect.

In terms of the hardware, the iPad Air features the A7 SoC with a dual-core ARM v8-based CPU clocked at 1.2 GHz. Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) was the first manufacturer to kickstart the 64-bit revolution for mobile devices, mainly due to its ability to control hardware and software. The iPad Air comes with a screen size of 9.7 inches and a resolution of 2048 x 1536, which comes out to a pixel density of 264 ppi. There’s not much to say about the iPad Air, as it is often considered to be the benchmark for judging tablets against. With the discounted price, the iPad Air Wi-Fi only 16GB version is now available for as low as $399, with the 32GB costing $449. The LTE models have also seen discounts, and are now available for $529 for the 16GB version and $579 for the 32GB variant.

Surface Pro 3

Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) is positioning the Surface Pro 3 against the MacBook Air, touting several benefits like a kickstand, touchscreen and stylus. Clearly, the tablet is intended for work, but it excels at being a portable tablet as well. One of the standout features of the Surface Pro 3 is the hinged kickstand, which allows you to position the tablet at several angles.

Designed for power users, the Surface Pro 3 is available in configurations starting from $799, for which you’ll get a 64GB SSD and an Intel’s (NASDAQ:INTC) Core i3 CPU clocked at 1.5 GHz. The Core i5 CPU clocked at 1.9 GHz is available for $999 for a 128GB SSD, and for $1,299 when paired with a 256GB SSD. The 1.7 GHz Core i7 variations are also available for $1,549 and $1,949, which feature a 256GB and 512GB SSD. Judging by the price points targeted by Microsoft, the Surface Pro 3 is more an Ultrabook-style notebook than a mere tablet.

The pricing may seem like a lot for a tablet, but the Surface Pro 3 is unlike anything else that is available in the world of computing today. The touchscreen responsiveness is at par with what you find in other tablets, and the performance figures are in line with that of Ultrabooks that feature Core i5 and Core i7 processors. Microsoft has successfully managed to cram incredibly powerful hardware in a lightweight form factor.

The build quality offered by the tablet is outstanding, the 12-inch screen with a resolution of 2160 x 1440 is one of the best available and the optional keyboard docking stand adds to the functionality of the Surface Pro 3. With a full version of Windows 8.1 Pro, the tablet’s main area of focus is productivity, but that does not mean that it cannot be utilized for multimedia consumption. The kickstand makes it ideal to prop up the tablet in various configurations, and the hinge is built to last.

Other hardware features of the Surface Pro 3 include 5 MP cameras at the front and back, full-size USB 3.0 port, mini DisplayPort, Wi-Fi 802.11 ac and Bluetooth 4.0 connectivity along with stereo speakers the feature Dolby Audio-enhanced sound. Also included is a stylus that offers various levels of pressure sensitivity. The ability to run a full-fledged version of Windows enables users to install and run intensive games like League of Legends, Civilization V, and The Elder Scrolls Online. The tablet can also connect with an Xbox 360 controller for Windows.

Samsung Galaxy Tab S

Samsung (KRX:005935) is known to make a lot of tablets on a yearly basis. For those looking for entry-level slates, there’s the Galaxy Tab series. The Galaxy Tab S series is targeted at the mid-tier and high-end markets, with three variants on offer. All three versions are available in Wi-Fi only and LTE editions, with the non-cellular models featuring Samsung’s Exynos 5420 hardware, while the LTE variants come with Qualcomm Snapdragon 800.

The design of the tablets in the Galaxy Tab S series are a notch above what you’d find in the Galaxy Tab series, and the screens similarly offer higher resolutions. All three tablets come with a 2560 x 1600 resolution AMOLED display that Samsung claims is the best display on a tablet. The AMOLED panel does make colors stand out, but it does tend to over-saturate. The tablets are available in storage variations of 16 or 32 GB, come with 3 GB RAM as standard, 8 MP camera at the back, 2.1 MP shooter at the front, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac connectivity and microSD slots that can accommodate 128GB cards.

With prices starting as low as $399 for the 8.4-inch variant, the Galaxy Tab S series is a viable contender if you’re looking to buy a tablet that offers a high-resolution screen and high-end hardware.

2. Destiny

Developer: Bungie
Publisher: Activision
Release Date: Sept. 9, 2014
Platform: Xbox One, PS4, Xbox 360, PS3
Genre: Shooter, Sci-Fi
MSRP: $59.99

Destiny is a prime example of an over-hyped shooter that faltered under its own weight. The game was supposed to be Bungie’s magnum opus, a game that transcends the realms of online FPS and MMO-style RPG elements. While it’s failed to live up to its dynamic potential, the game is masterfully addictive in all the right ways–but sometimes for the wrong reasons.

The content may be limited in terms of end-game, but Destiny is an action-packed sci-fi romp that’ll take you across the stars and back. The story is weak, but the FPS mechanics are incredibly refined–it’s here that Bungie’s Halo prowess shines forth with light almost brighter than the sun.

Essentially Destiny is an online-only shooter wherein players can team up with random Guardians–that is supersoldiers powered by the Light, a mysterious energy not unlike the Force in Star Wars–to tackle a swath of missions and co-operative content.

There’s also a distinct RPG element in the game that affords for a unique spin on Borderlands-style shoot-and-loot action, complete with a sophisticated style and grace that almost matches Halo in its fluid grace. There are three main classes–Hunter, Warlock and Titan–each with their own varying skill trees that can be tactically used in conjunction with specific gear.

PVP is stellar and proves to be a delightful mix of sentiments old and new, with competitive content rolling out as the weeks go by.

Bungie is committed to making Destiny an expansive playground for would-be Guardians, but don’t expect anything free: the biggest updates will be hidden behind paywalls via Season Passes. Even still, the game offers a smorgasboard of content that’s rich with shooter elements that empower gamers, giving them the tools and arsenal they need to take on dreadful foes like the Hive and the cruel machines of the Vex.

Destiny has proven to be a must-have yearly release despite its shortcomings, and has proven to rank up there with the highest and most popular of games due to its immensely addictive nature. Be sure to check out our official Destiny review for more info on the game.

3. Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor

Developer: Monolith Productions
Publisher: Warner Bros. Interactive
Release Date: Sept. 30, 2014
Platform: Xbox One, PS4, PC, Xbox 360, PS3
Genre: RPG, Fantasy
MSRP: $59.99

Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor may look like you’r average hack-and-slash action-adventure game, but Monolith has created a fluid dynamism that marries the worlds of stealthy assassinations with all-out sword-slashing bravado.

Set in Tolkien’s landmark eponymous Middle-Earth, this game carries players across a journey through the shadowy realms of Mordor and explores the expansive mythos of the landmark fantasy series.

The game’s combat system perfectly matches skill with suave tactical strategy, making for enthralling and empowering fights. Talion, the game’s protagonist, is infused with the power of the dreaded Wraiths, giving him a substantial edge against the hordes of Uruks spread throughout Mordor.

Talion has a huge armament of abilities and skills at his disposal, encompassing a webwork of talent trees that players can customize to tailor their own otherworldly hero.

Using a combination of weapons like bow and arrow, daggers and swords, Talion channels his inner Wraith–an Elven lord by the name of Celebrimbor–to dispatch evil and use a range of useful abilities.

Shadow of Mordor essentially feels like a cross between Assassin’s Creed and Dynasty Warriors, with a hefty does of RPG aspects like skills and upgradable weapons. But the game it sets itself apart from these games with a truly intuitive and unique mechanic called the Nemesis System.

The Nemesis System allows Talion to mark targets among the massive ranks of Sauron’s army. These marks are bosses of sorts that get harder and rank up if they defeat you in battle, becoming stronger along the way. It’s a sort of predator-vs-prey hunting scheme wherein players can find helpful intel to identify weak points of a boss, which is essential for those higher-tiered baddies.

Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor combines a huge offering of fantastic elements together to make a satisfying brew of fantasy fun, complimented with a perfect blend of RPG and action mechanics to keep things fresh and exciting.

4. Far Cry 4

Developer: Ubisoft Montreal
Publisher: Ubisoft
Release Date: Nov. 18, 2014
Platform: Xbox One, PS4, PC, Xbox 360, PS3
Genre: Action, Shooter
MSRP: $59.99

Far Cry 4 expands on series’ already-tremendous formula of action-packed chaos. Set in the frosty Himalayan peaks of Kyrat, players are treated to one of the most exotic, sprawling gameworlds of the series to date.

Kyrat is a truly massive open-world achievement in terms of scale and variety, with highlands, lowlands and everything in between, featuring engaging wildlife like snow leopards, stampeding elephants, crashing rhinos, and snarling tigers.

As per tradition, the game’s story pits Ajay Ghale (the specialist badass protagonist) in a region gripped in turmoil and revolution. A terrifyingly cruel–and rather humorously psychotic–dictator named Pagan Min is at the center of the havoc, erupting the region in a brutal and bloody civil war.

The game’s FPS combat is as dynamic as ever, with a smattering of new features like being able to hire mercenaries to fight alongside you. Vehicles have always been an important part of Far Cry, and in the fourth chapter we have the brilliant mini-skycopter to soar the peaks of Kyrat and blast baddies to smithereens.

You can also drive snowmobiles while shooting at rebels and dodging deadly rifts and flying over precipitous cliffs

Then there’s the skysuit. Few games have captured the heart-pounding excitement of gracefully piercing the heavens like a human bullet, but Far Cry 4 hits this mark perfectly.

Ajay also has two skill trees: the Tiger and the Elephant, both of which have a retinue of passive and active abilities to aid in battle. You get to customize Ajay as you see fit–want him to focus more on stealth and defensive measures? Go with the Elephant.

Want him to be a one-man army that shoots first and asks questions later? Then the Tiger tree is right for you.

All in all Far Cry 4 has something for everyone, and packs in pop culture themes from all over. Players feel like Lara Croft or Indiana Jones when they explore exotic ruins for treasures, and channel Rambo when gunning down hordes of baddies.

James Bond makes an appearance when Ajay does some fantastic death-defying stunt in his wingsuit, and Bear Grylls takes down a tiger in the jungle wilderness.

With a truly breathtaking and dynamic open-world environment like Kyrat, the game is a startling reminder of how far video games have come over the years.

You can get lost in the snow-capped mountains or the deep, dense canopies of the jungle, marveling at the cascading waterfalls and crashing elephants–and that’s exactly why this game is a must-buy.

The next-gen port of Grand Theft Auto V is Rockstar’s masterpiece. It’s something that gamers have been looking forward to for a while now, and is seen as the true definitive version of the game. If you’ve already played it on last-generation like most of the gaming world, then it might be wise to pass this up unless you want to give it another spin.

Essentially the new GTA V isn’t really new; it’s a re-mastered port. Even still the graphical differences between the old and new release are like night and day, with the next-gen flavor has Los Santos blazing with vivid life.

What makes GTA V so incredible is its cast of characters, the cops-and-robbers heists, and the game’s immersive environments. In terms of scale, accuracy, representation and graphical fidelity, Rockstar has captured lightning in a bottle. The in-game world is so resplendent with photo-realism that it’s uncanny, making it look almost better than real life.

GTA V features a three-man crew rather than the traditional silent one-man protagonist: Michael, the savvy, rich ex-bankrobber who’s having a mid-life crisis of boredom; Franklin, the young gang-banger looking for bigger and better things outside of the hood; and Trevor, a truly unique specimen of pure psychotic brilliance who easily steals the show from the very beginning.

Apart from the main characters and the namesakes of GTA, the game introduces a series of innovative full-scale heists that recreate some pretty impressive robberies. In this respect the game feels like a movie in terms of its scope, and players can choose how they want to pull off the score as well as which heists to take part in.

Then there’s the smattering of side-quests and extras that’ll pull you right in and never let go. While the heists are the main part of the game, each character has their own unique missions and questlines.

Franklin, for example, can invest in the stock market to earn big bucks, and Trevor, an entrepreneur in methamphetamine sales, wreaks havoc on the competition for his trade.

Being able to switch between Michael, Franklin and Trevor on the fly gives gamers the freedom to tackle whatever mission they want in the style they want. You can also beef up each character’s stats via a RPG-like progression system that’s somewhat like GTA: San Andreas.

The next-gen port also brings a first-person mode to combat, transforming Grand Theft Auto into a bona-fide action FPS game for the first time on consoles. This is a pretty heavy transition and affords a whole new style of play, especially for the game’s online component.

Grand Theft Auto Online deserves a nod as well. It’s essentially Rockstar’s open-world MMO-style online adventure where players can join a gang and combat rival gangs in a series of online playlists. These range from deathmatch-style combat to racing and heists, and characters earn points as well as stats to boost their reputation and abilities.

Grand Theft Auto V is a solid choice as capitalizes on fun.

It brings an amazingly entertaining campaign, a host of side-missions, a trio of unforgettable characters and an engaging online component. The game’s environments are truly remarkable and bring a sense of realism unlike any other GTA game, and paves the way forward for the franchise itself.

Conclusion

These five games are sure-fire winners for the holiday season, and will bring festive delight for any gamer for weeks to come. With a slew of Black Friday deals you can snag any or all of these games at discounted rates, so be sure to check out the deals before you head to the stores.

As for platform choice, most of the games are the same across all consoles, with higher-end PC’s having considerable graphical and performance boosts. In the case of Far Cry 4, though, you should stick with the PS4 variant as it allows friends to try out the game for free.

Then there’s PS4’s exclusive Share Play feature which essentially lets your friends try out your games across the PlayStation Network. Something to keep in mind if you want to try out a game before you buy it, or let a friend do the same.

With Halo 5: Guardians, 343 Industries aims to shake up the franchise’s classic FPS formula with a host of new Spartan abilities.

343i wants Halo 5 to be different. They want the highly anticipated continuation of Master Chief’s mysterious adventures to stand apart from the other Halo games.

Traditionally the series’ many entrants have done this by way of innovative new features–take ODST‘s VISR mode, or Reach‘s superpower-esque classes–that all push the bar and reinvent the battlefield as we know it.

Now the studio introduces seven new Spartan abilities such as sprinting, jump thrusts, ledge grapples and other features that really make players feel like a true super soldier.

“In typical Halo you have the already awesome [three-layered] sandbox of the weapon, the melee and the grenade,” 343i said in a new behind the scenes video for the Halo 5 beta. “We wanted to add the Spartan abilities in as a fourth layer [to the game].”

Halo 5‘s new abilities won’t be specific add-ons or perks you unlock via Call of Duty-style progression; 343i affirms that these are “baseline traits”, and that everyone has them from the start to ensure “equal footing”.

Below we have a list of Halo 5‘s new Spartan abilities and a breakdown of what they do:

Thruster Pack - This is just like the exo thrust ability in Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, allowing players to juke and boost in all directions. They can also be used in mid-air, and provide a speed boost while running.

Ground Pound - Similar to the Fists of Havoc finisher for Destiny Titans, the ground pound can be executed while in mid-air to smash opponents and send a sort of shockwave around impact.

Clamber - Ledges can now be seamlessly and fluidly grabbed onto, allowing you to save those perfect jumps. This also avoids embarrassing deaths caused by missing a jump.

Slide - Used in tandem with Sprint, allows players to slide across the ground to reach cover or deliver killing blows while below headshot level.

Charge - Also used in tandem with Sprint. When hitting terminal velocity, users can hit the melee button and launch a destructive blow against their foes, but it’s worth noting that only either Slide or Charge can be used when reaching required speed.

Sprint - Get around quickly, but at a cost: shields don’t regenerate, and you can’t fire while you’re running.

Smart Scope - Remember pressing the zoom button in Halo 2 when you had a SMG equipped, and the little binoculars-style scope helped you scout enemies? That’s essentially what Smart Scope is; it gives a scope to any weapon, especially those that don’t come with scopes by default, like the Assault Rifle. You can get knocked out of Smart Scope at any time by getting shot, and 343i affirms that hip-fire isn’t penalized in any way.

Honestly by the look and feel of these abilities in action, Halo 5 looks like it brings the most accurate and true realization of a Spartan in any Halo game. As someone who’s read the books and knows about a Spartan’s superhuman feats of derring-do and mayhem, these abilities are spot-on and truly bring a sense of awe and strength to the warrior.

Coupled with these new additions the fast-paced gameplay looks like a whole new breed of shooter altogether, affording gamers with a whole new level of strategic and tactical execution.

I personally hope that these new abilities prove to be beneficial to the series–they look absolutely amazing–and we’ll have to wait until the Halo 5: Guardians beta kicks off next month to find out for sure.

Halo 5‘s multiplayer beta test will run from Dec. 29 to Jan. 18, with owners of the newly released Halo: The Master Chief Collection guaranteed entry. Halo 5 itself is scheduled to release sometime in 2015 exclusively on the Xbox One.

Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) announced Windows 10 last month, with the Technical Preview now available to download in both 32-bit and 64-bit flavors for users looking to try out the latest that Microsoft has to offer. The Redmond giant mentioned during the announcement that the preview was just an initial build, with several features to be added before the retail version hits the market sometime next year. Nevertheless, there is enough new stuff in the OS to tinker with.

A look at what’s new

Start Menu

One of the biggest changes in Windows 10 is the reintroduction of the Start menu. After significant backlash surrounding the removal of the Start button with Windows 8, Microsoft is now slowly switch back to a familiar Windows 7-esque interface with Windows 10, layering a few bits of Modern UI for added effect. So while the Start menu is back in Windows 10, it features a very different look to what you’re used to seeing in Windows 7, thanks to the presence of Live Tiles.

On the left of the menu, you get the frequently used list of programs, while the right side features Live Tiles that can act as either notifications or shortcuts to launch programs. You can not only resize the Live Tiles and move them around, but also change the size of the Start menu itself. Another new addition is universal change, which works much like what search used to in Windows 7, but with the ability to query results on the web.

Task View

Task View is Microsoft’s version of virtual desktop mode, a feature that has been present in other operating systems for a while now. With Task View, you get an Expose-like view of all the desktops you created, and can also organize windows into various desktops for easier multitasking through a snap feature. Task View can be accessed by the button on the taskbar or by using the Windows + TAB shortcut.

With Task View, you can create various desktops and cluster them together to switch between views. For instance, you can create a desktop with a Word document and an Excel spreadsheet, and another one that displays your music client and a browser. Activating Task View shows a list of all available desktops at the bottom of your display, and you can see the actual apps that are open within the desktop by hovering over the desktop.

Snap Assist

Microsoft introduced Snap mode in Windows 8, and the feature gets a few tweaks in Windows 10. Now every app can be dynamically resized, and can also be made to snap to the left or right of your screen by clicking on the Windows key and the left or right arrow key. The number of apps that can be snapped to your screen has also been increased to four.

Search

Along with offering a search bar on the Start menu, Microsoft is also including a search button on the taskbar. The goal with the search button is to easily find documents and files that you’ve recently worked on.

Other changes

A significant change is the move away from the Start screen in Windows 10, with all Modern apps now featured in the desktop mode as individual windows.

A feature that got a lot of demo time during Microsoft’s announcement has been a stalwart of Windows, and one that has been relatively unchanged from as far back as Windows 98. With Windows 10, you’ll get a new command prompt that allows you to paste directly using the Ctrl + V key combination. That was the only feature that was demoed, and there’s not knowing what other changes will make their way to the terminal before the debut of the OS.

A new YouTube ad from Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) says its “game over” for the Macbook Air when it tries to take on the Yoga 3 Pro from Lenovo (HKG: 0992) .

The ad from Microsoft — which is similar to a campaign comparing the Surface Pro 3 to the Macbook Air — highlights the Yoga 3’s thinner body, multiple formfactor modes thanks to its 180-degree rotation of its display, and touchscreen as strengths compared to the Macbook Air.

Finally, a Macbook killer

Lenovo’s Yoga series has created something of a renaissance in the Windows notebook, particularly Ultrabook, space. The second generation of the Yoga was nearly universally praised by reviewers, with many calling it the best Windows notebook on the market. Its long battery life, sharp quad-HD screen, and thin form factor was warmly received by the market with the Yoga 2 Pro becoming a strong seller. While Lenovo doesn’t disclose sales numbers for individual products, the company became the world’s top PC manufacturer in 2014 and saw its profits jump by 36%.

When the Macbook Air first came out, and was later refreshed, it made many PC vendors stumble as they tried to build something as aesthetically pleasing as the Macbook Air. First came the Ultrabook form factor, and from that the Yoga series was born.

However, Lenovo should not get too confident. In Apple’s most recent earnings statement it disclosed that it sold 8.9% more Macs quarter-over-quarter. Of course this also includes desktop computers, but it also means that the likes of Lenovo will have healthy competition in 2015.

Microsoft was rumored to be releasing a fitness band called the Microsoft Band early on Wednesday, Microsoft shortly thereafter launched it to the public.

Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) has decided to throw its hat into the wearables arena with their own smartwatch/fitness band called the Microsoft Band — no it isn’t a new music group made of Microsoft executives. Microsoft doesn’t specifically call the Microsoft Band a fitness band, but the repeated focus on fitness and health across this product’s features makes it clear that’s Microsoft’s focus and that productivity comes second. This is most evident in Microsoft’s launching of Microsoft Health, which is a platform to help users of the Microsoft Band to track their fitness and health all in one app, which also happens to work on Android, iOS and Windows Phone.

The company has also already gotten themselves partnered up with Runkeeper, Gold’s Gym and MyFitnessPal in order to give you the best guided fitness experience possible.

In terms of hardware, the Microsoft Band appears to be right up there with their competitors featuring a 1.4″ LCD with a 320 x 106 resolution and 48 hours of battery life, without GPS enabled. It also comes jam packed with more sensors than virtually any other device out there. It features an optical heart rate sensor, a 3-axis accelerometer and gyro, a gyrometer, a GPS sensor, an ambient light sensor, a skin temperature sensor, a UV sensor, a capacitive sensor (display), a galvanic skin response sensor and a microphone. It also features Bluetooth 4.0 (LE) which is what allows for the 2-day battery life. This is all powered by dual 100 mAh batteries, which is why the band cannot be adjusted too much in terms of size. As a result, the watch will come in three sizes and you need to figure out which one fits the thickness of your wrist best.

The Microsoft Band also has a ton of other features which include the 24-hour heart rate monitor, run tracker, step tracker, calorie tracker and sleep tracker. It also has guided workouts and goal setting for the fitness conscious person that takes working out seriously.

There are also tons of alerts and notifications that are also available on the Microsoft Band, which include text messaging, calls, calendar, email and smart notifications for certain apps. There is also — shockingly — a watch mode where you can actually use it as a watch.

The Microsoft Band unsurprisingly also has Facebook and Twitter integration, allowing you to stay up to date on all your social media without needing to take out your phone. There’s also Cortana integration for Windows Phone 8.1 users, allowing you to take notes and set reminders using the Microsoft Band.

As if all of that wasn’t enough, the Microsoft Band also has weather, finance, and a timer/stopwatch functionality, which is admittedly expected of almost any wearable nowadays. The interesting tie-up that Microsoft did make, however, was with Starbucks to allow you to integrate your Starbucks card into the Microsoft Band, adding their own Seattle touch to this device and possibly pleasing a lot of caffeine addicted users.

The $199 Microsoft Band can already be purchased online via Microsoft Store or in person at any Microsoft Store. Be aware that there are three different sizes and that you should get yourself sized before buying one.

San Andreas can be picked up on the Xbox Games Store for the steal-able sum of $3.74.

That’s right. You can get one of the most acclaimed and entertaining Grand Theft Auto games in history for less than five bucks.

When it was released on the PS2 and Xbox, San Andreas won over the gaming community with its surprisingly in-depth RPG mechanics, unforgettable cast of characters, and an amazing amount of side-missions.

It was also hilarious and quite vulgar–so much that the game was censored thanks to the infamous “Hot Coffee” minigame.

The Xbox 360 version boosts San Andreas‘ resolution to 720p and includes other visual upgrades like enhanced draw distances and improved graphics. Achievements have also been added, with 11 secret unlockables thrown in to boot.

Rockstar has also added in a slew of San Andreas-themed “throwback” jobs in GTA Online in celebration of the game’s anniversary, including the deathmatch mode Grove Street Brawlers, the Bloodring Bangers race and many more.

Below you can find the full list of achievements for the Xbox 360 version:
