Resolution on mobiles is pushing past the point where changes are visible to the human eye.

The post Resolution Overkill: Why QHD and 4K are Too Much for Smartphones appeared first on VR World.

In late November Qualcomm (NASDAQ: QCOM) announced that the next-generation of its SoCs would have the processing power to push out a 4K resolution on a smartphone. This would be a jump from the existing QHD (quad HD, 2560×1440) resolution that’s found on the displays of high-end smartphones currently on the market.

While 4K certainly has its uses and benefits on larger displays, the potential use cases on such a small smartphone screen are negligible at best. On an average smartphone screen, which is usually around 5.5-6 inches, the resolution of QHD — let alone 4K — is too great for the eye to appreciate. Apple’s Retina display has a pixel-per inch density of 326. A QHD display on a smartphone would equal something in the range of 538.

A PPI of 538 is far beyond the maximum resolution that the human eye can recognize. There is a bit of controversy as to what the highest practical PPI is for a 5.5 inch screen held 12-18 inches away from the eye, but the consensus holds that it’s 477 PPI at 12 inches and 318 PPI at 18 inches. Of course, holding it closer than 12 inches away from your face would make it difficult to properly focus.

So this means that the iPhone’s Retina resolution introduced in 2010 is the highest practical resolution for a smartphone sized screen. Of course with bigger screens found on phablets and full-on tablets this figure jumps.

QHD and 4K smartphones are impractical

The other issue with QHD and 4K displays on smartphones is the substantial battery drain that comes as a result. Battery technology has reached a ceiling, yet the demands keep on increasing. A QHD or 4K screen requires substantially more push from the SoC to drive a screen of that resolution, which means the SoC will require more battery power for all tasks.

Before the 2015 Mobile World Congress kicked off, Huawei (SHE:002502) announced that it would not be producing 4K smartphones because it simply is not worth the battery drain.

“4K needs a lot of power, so if you use it you have to make compromises. A 4K display on a smartphone may give you half a day of battery life but a 2K display can give you maybe one day or more,” President of the Handset Product Line Kevin Ho is quoted as saying. “4K has four times the pixels of Full HD so the power consumption is maybe 4 or 8 times as much as Full HD so the smartphone has to have compromises with battery life.”

All about competition

Pushing up the resolution of smartphone displays is not the only way to improve the quality of the screen. There’s much to be done to improve color depth, backlight quality, and the ability for the screen to display in bright conditions.

But the resolution race is a way for vendors to compete with each other. The screen resolution of a device is an easy and digestible metric to understand. But for consumers this resolution race isn’t, in the end, a value add as it does little to increase productivity or performance.

The brand new SE790C follows the new trend for WQHD displays, with its resolution of 3,440 by 1,440 pixels and 21:9 aspect ratio. It is bursting with high-end specs like a 3000:1 contrast ratio and 300 cd/m2 typical brightness with dynamic lighting and shading.

The viewing angle is 178 degrees horizontally and vertically, which will give a great viewing experience however you choose to set up your desk and office. The SE790C houses four USB 3.0 super-charging ports which should be able to properly charge more demanding portable devices like the iPad with 2.1A.

The monitor also incorporates dual 7-watt stereo speakers to give the full multimedia experience. Users can choose from PiP (Picture-in-Picture) and PbP 2.0 (Picture-by-Picture) to connect and view two devices simultaneously without the need to downscale content. This will be nice for those who want to set up their console and computer to the same monitor to save desktop space. The SE790C also comes with a height adjustable curved T-shaped, while the panel itself has a hidden VESA mount bracket. Based on what Samsung calls 3000R (curvature radius of 3000mm) design the curved display is said to provide a “noticeably different viewing experience from traditional flat screen monitors and competitive curved monitors”. Samsung claims that the monitor creates a panoramic-like view and creates a wider and fuller field of view. It even claims that the monitor’s design creates a 3D-like effect, though this is not really likely and seems more like they are claiming that it is much more of an immersive display.

The partnership will have Samsung making FreeSync enabled displays, and they will begin to appear in March of next year. The first will be 23.6 inch and 28 inch versions of the UD590 which will both be UHD (4K) displays. Later will come some more UHD displays in the UE850 line with 23.6 inch, 28 inch , and 31.5 inch models. AMD’s FreeSync is its alternative to Nvidia’s G-SYNC tech that has been in the market for over a year now. AMD went the royalty free route with its FreeSync technology that is based on the Adaptive-Sync open standard for DisplayPort. VESA is implementing this technology in the new DisplayPort 1.2a and DisplayPort 1.3 specification. With the lower costs of FreeSync tech this will no doubt encourage more manufacturers to use it in upcoming models.

It may be fairly late in the game for FreeSync since G-Sync has done well with gaming enthusiasts looking to get a good gaming monitor. Nvidia (NASDAQ: NVDA) has made headway getting companies on the G-SYNC train, such as ASUS (TPE: 2357), BenQ (TPE:8215), Philips, and Acer (TPE:2353). The 27″ QHD (2560×1440) 144Hz ASUS ROG Swift PG278Q is by far one of the best G-SYNC monitors that is currently available but sells for $799 and isn’t even 4K. There are also UHD versions available such as the Acer XB280HK that retails for just under $800. But even with a decent amount of monitors on the market, Nvidia’s G-Sync monitors command a serious premium over equally specced monitors without G-Sync. As such, this could potentially put Nvidia at a disadvantage since many monitor manufacturers are constantly looking for ways to differentiate without spending too much money on the bill of materials (BOM).

There is little doubt that FreeSync will do well and that the partnership between AMD and Samsung will do well with the products. With about four months until the models come out users will have plenty of time to set some money aside each month now that we have a date. This will be the go-to monitor of choice for the AMD fans and there sure are plenty of them waiting for the next-gen AMD product to pair with a FreeSync monitor. There has also been talk of companies like BENQ and even ASUS potentially releasing FreeSync compatible monitors. The reality of the situation is that adaptive sync is the superior technology and will very likely get adopted by Intel and that will help AMD overcome Nvidia’s overall size and dominance in the graphics market. Once AMD can partner with Intel (crazy to think) to push FreeSync/Adaptive Sync in both companies’ products then G-Sync will effectively be dead. But you can’t blame Nvidia for wanting to improve gaming, even at a fairly high cost.

The partnership will see Samsung releasing new FreeSync monitors in March 2015.

Eurocom has always managed to entice customers by offering a host of customization options with its models, and is continuing to do so by rolling out QHD displays for the M4.

Customers looking to buy the 13.3-inch Eurocom M4 will be able to choose between a Quad-HD+ panel that features a resolution of 3200 x 1800, a QHD display that comes with a 2560 x 1440 with a 1000: 1 contrast ratio and the more standard full-HD variant. The QHD and full-HD panels are also available in a matte finish.

It isn’t just the screen that is highly customizable, as users have the ability of choosing from several processors that include the 2.40 GHz Core i7-4700MQ, the 2.50 GHz Core i7-4710MQ or the 2.90 GHz Core i7-4910MQ. For enthusiast users, Eurocom is also offering the Haswell-based 3 GHz Core i7-4930MX Extreme Edition as well as the 3.10 GHz Core i7-4940MX Extreme Edition. The extreme edition CPUs do contribute significantly to the final cost of the build, with the i7-4930MX priced at $640, while the i7-4940MX will set you back $1050 just for the CPU.

You can also configure 16 GB DDR3L RAM clocked at 1866 MHz, and get a total of 3 TB of internal storage, which includes two SSDs and a single mechanical drive. While the list of hardware offered by Eurocom is extensive, the brand still needs to offer more options when it comes to the video card, as you can currently only get the Eurocom M4 with an Nvidia GTX 860M. The addition of the GTX 900 series cards would be welcome.

For the amount of features it offers, the Eurocom M4 does not cost a lot, as we were able to configure a QHD panel, 16 GB RAM, 2.50 GHz Core i7-4710MQ and a 500 GB Samsung Evo 840 SSD for under $2000.

GoPro (NASDAQ:GPRO) today announced its GoPro Hero4 Black and Hero4 Silver as well as its new Hero budget camera.

However, the big deal was that GoPro had finally released a camera that could really do 4K video at 30 FPS and that’s exactly what the GoPro Hero4 is capable of. And in typical GoPro fashion, the company already has a promotional video showing you, in 4K, what this new camera footage looks like. The great thing is that GoPro has uploaded this footage in 4K, so if you’ve got a 4K TV or a 4K monitor you should be able to view it in its full 4K glory. If you watch the video, you’ll also notice that the GoPro Hero4 is used in a lot of drone flights for this video, which makes the 4K seem all that more impressive.

While it doesn’t make much sense why GoPro didn’t call it the Hero4K, there’s a good chance that we could see the company releasing an updated version of the Hero4 that isn’t called the plus edition but rather the 4K edition. Except, that will possibly confuse consumers as to whether or not the Hero4 has 4K capability or not. This is a clear marketing and branding opportunity lost for GoPro, which is a bit unfortunate, but they may redeem themselves somewhere else later on. Also, this camera will sell for a whopping $499, which is $100 or 25% more than any camera GoPro has sold before.

Another thing to keep in mind with the Hero4 is that it still has a microUSB 2.0 connector, which means that the data throughput on the GoPro Hero4 is still very low for a camera capable of outputting 4K video files. As such, it may actually take quite a bit of time to pull video files from the camera and you may be better off taking the memory card out and putting it directly into your computer. Additionally, still using miniUSB means that you have to keep a miniUSB cable around for charging the damn thing because virtually no devices nowadays (other than GoPros) use miniUSB.

At its Unpacked 2 event in Berlin, co-hosted with an event in New York City, Samsung (KRX:005930) unveiled the Galaxy Note 4.

The hotly anticipated fourth edition of Samsung’s genre-defining tablet comes with a quad-core 2.7 GHz Snapdragon 805 SoC that packs a 620 MHz GPU, a 5.7-inch 1440p display, a 16 megapixel rear facing camera and a 3.7 megapixel front facing shooter. Samsung will be packing 3 GB of RAM onto the device, and giving users the option for 32 or 64 GB of internal storage. The phablet itself comes it at 6 inches by 3.1 inches wide by 0.34 inch thick. It weighs 6.2 ounces. The phone will be runing Android 4.4.4 KitKat.

Arguably the defining feature of the Galaxy Note 4 is its high-resoluton AMOLED screen. The 1440p resolution — the highest in the industry — means the Galaxy Note 4 will be displaying things at 2,560×1,440 pixels. The Galaxy Note 4 isn’t the first device to use this ultra-high resolution, but the inclusion of that resolution with the phone effectively makes it now a gold standard.

Like Samsung’s other recently launched smartphones, the Galaxy Note 4 includes a heart-rate monitor and a fingerprint sensor.

The Galaxy Note 4 will be launched globally in October. Pricing will depend on whether the end user has the device on or off contract.

Samsung, which once enjoyed one half of a virtual duopoly in the smartphone market with Apple, needs a big hit and a lot is resting on the success of the Galaxy Note 4. Samsung’s profits have weakened upon increased competition in the space, but the Note series of phones have proven to be a reliable success with many copycats springing up since their introduction in 2011.

So, everyone was expecting LG to make the next Google Nexus tablet, or maybe ASUS since they’ve also been one of the part Nexus tablet partners. However, you’d be wrong to assume either of those are correct since the next Nexus 9 tablet looks to be coming from HTC and it looks like its going to be a real competitor. The new Nexus 9″ tablet codenamed Volantis (not to be confused with Lady Gaga’s flying dress) was outed by Android Police today with a full image and spec drop of the device. And based upon what we’re seeing, it looks like Nvidia booted Qualcomm out of the latest Nexus tablet as a tit for tat when Qualcomm booted them out of the Nexus 7 in 2013. This 9″ tablet appears to be a direct competitor to Apple’s iPad Mini and will likely pre-empt any updates Apple brings to it with higher resolution or a faster processor.

The Nexus 9 tablet is expected to sport an 8.9″ 2048 x 1440 resolution display which will be a 281 PPI display, higher than any tablet Apple currently offers. It will weigh only 418 grams for the Wi-Fi version and 427 grams for the LTE version, although the LTE modem is still TBD. What else is known about this tablet is that it will have an NVIDIA Logan 64-bit processor, which is Nvidia’s 64-bit custom ARM dual-core SoC. Lots of people have been waiting for this SoC from Nvidia and after some delays it may finally be coming here in the shape of a Nexus device. Interestingly enough, it will only have 2 GB of RAM, somewhat low for a tablet with such a high-end processor. It will, thankfully, have stereo front-facing speakers like most of HTC’s latest phones and NVIDIA’s Tegra Note 7. It will also have a 3 Megapixel front-facing camera and an 8 Megapixel back main camera which appears to look a lot like the Nexus 5 camera.

Nexus 9 Volantis rumored specs courtesy of Android Police

The Nexus 9 will come in 16 and 32 GB flavors which will cost $399 and $499 (more pricey than the 7″ version) and will have an aluminum zero-gap construction. This means that it will be the most premium looking, premium feeling and premium performing device Google has put out to date. The expected launch for this tablet is somewhere around Q4 of 2014, so don’t expect this thing to come out any time soon. If anything, it will probably be a lot like the Nexus 5 launch, a mad dash that is a result of some leaks.

Did you just buy a Galaxy S5? Did you wait? Because if you waited, you’ll be glad you did. SAMMOBILE just posted all of the official details about the Galaxy S5 LTE-A (LTE-Advanced) and just pulled it, but thanks to Google Cache, we’ve got all the details. What makes this new phone so much better than the Galaxy S5? Well, it isn’t anything like what the Galaxy S4 LTE-A was to the Galaxy S4. The Galaxy S5 LTE-A is actually a complete and utter upgrade over the current Galaxy S5. First and foremost, it has LTE-Advanced which makes it incredibly capable of delivering high-speed data that reaches download speeds of up to 225 Mbps. This phone is going to be launched in Korea first because their networks are the most capable of delivering anywhere near those speeds. It can achieve those speeds thanks to carrier aggregation support along with wideband support, which are currently only supported by Korean telecoms, but some American carriers are working towards supporting LTE-Advanced relatively soon. However, things like Verizon’s XLTE should not be mistaken for LTE-Advanced.

What makes it all the more interesting is that it will have an upgraded 2560 x 1440 resolution display, the one that everyone was expecting from the Galaxy S5 when it was originally launched. Remember that the Galaxy S5 only came out 2 months ago and now we’re already seeing the S5 with the newer higher resolution display. Because the display will remain the same size as the Galaxy S5 and as a result of the higher resolution and the same screen size it ends up having a pixel density of 577 PPI. It will also have and improved SoC as well, with the Snapdragon 805 SoC which we’ve already benchmarked and already know what to expect in terms of performance. It will also have 3GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage as well as a microSD card slot that will support a MicroSDXC card of up to 128GB.

Samsung Galaxy S5 LTE-A

Beyond that, the rest of the hardware stays essentially the same as the standard Galaxy S5 in terms of the camera (16 MP) and battery (2800 mAh) as well as the water and dust resistance. The software will likely remain the same as well, but the thing is that the higher display and new SoC should run the Samsung interface much more smoothly. Fortunately for Samsung, the Galaxy S5 LTE-A will at first only be made available in Korea on SK Telecom and will launch later on KT and LGU+. The phone itself will be available later this week, possibly June 19th (according to SAMMOBILE), and will have a pretty strong price of $919, which may just be an introductory price to keep it out of the price range of the standard Galaxy S5. As far as US consumers go, we have no idea when we can expect to see the Galaxy S5 LTE-A, but the truth is that we’ll probably see it towards the end of the summer after the original Galaxy S5 has had some time to sell out a bit more than the current 2 months.

Samsung has been criticized for making their product cycles far too short, much like they do with their tablets. However, one cannot criticize a company for being innovate and constantly innovating and pushing those innovations to their consumers. But the truth is that Samsung likely felt pressured to release the Galaxy S5 when they did because of HTC’s One M8 and LG’s G3. Not to mention they also wanted to get their phone out sooner rather than later when you consider that Apple’s iPhone 6 will likely be coming out this fall.

While the source of the rumor may be one that seems a bit off-kilter, this person who we are referring to has actually proven themselves in the past to be able to get legitimate iPhone hardware ahead of the launch.

Some images from MacFixit.AU that show the new iPhone 6

There have been countless rumors and leaks and all of the Mac and Apple fan sites will flood you with basically anything they can in order to ensure you click on it. Most of what we’ve seen online as of late has all culminated in Apple launching a larger iPhone. This addresses one of the biggest problems that people have had with the iPhone stating that it is simply too small for most people, causing many to go in search of Android devices with bigger screens. And most of the Android manufacturers have satisfied these needs by launching 5″, 5.5″ and 6″ phones (if you can call them phones past 5″). However, there are still a lot of people that like the small size of the iPhone and how comfortably it fits in their hands (especially if they have smaller hands). So, there is a very strong belief that the iPhone 6 will come in two sizes, one to satisfy the people wanting a bigger screen and another to keep the small phone people happy. There haven’t actually been any rumors that fully substantiate this possibility yet, but it would be a sound business decision on Apple’s part. Almost all of the leaked photos and videos about the new iPhone 6 basically show the newer larger design, which frankly bears a striking resemblance to the HTC One and HTC One M8 both of which we reviewed. Now, there have been a lot of leaks, like we stated earlier but not many of them had a confirming or solid source to verify the look or design, until now. A Taiwanese actor, famous for having shown himself with an iPhone 5C well in advance of the phone’s launch has once again posed with a new Apple iPhone, but this time it’s the iPhone 6 and he’s got it in hand next to an iPhone 5S. Thanks to the website SteveNotes.hk, we’ve got images of Jimmy Lin with the new iPhone 6 along with the iPhone 5S next to it for size.

As you can see from the Weibo image above, the new iPhone 6 (or whatever it’ll be called) is a larger phone than the iPhone 5S and has much more rounded edges which should make it feel much more comfortable in the hand than the somewhat sharp iPhone 5/S. There are also multiple sources claiming that this phone will have a 2K (2560 x 1440 ish) display, even though I’m not sure that this phone is large enough or there is a display small enough to fit in an iPhone and deliver that resolution. Keep in mind that the current iPhone 5S is 1136 x 640 resolution on a 4″ display and a 2K resolution would be more than quadrupling that in terms of pixels if they were to go 2K. The likelihood for that happening is VERY VERY low, so more realistically, we’ll finally see Apple move towards a more standard resolution like 1920 x 1080 or pretty close to it since Apple decided to stay away from 720P with their 1136 x 640 resolution on the iPhone 5.

The expected timeframe for this phone is still fall of this year, likely with a September announcement and an October or late September launch (like last year).

LG has finally announced their new LG G3 smartphone/phablet. As many had expected, the LG G3 does indeed sport a 5.5″ QHD display with 2560 x 1440 resolution, resulting in a 539 PPI pixel density. LG, however, rejects the claims that this phone is a phablet as they believe that the overall smaller bezel size makes this phone feel like a standard 5.1″ phone. It also has the expected Snapdragon 801 (not the faster Snapdragon 805 we just benchmarked) and LTE and 802.11ac/b/g/n connectivity. It will ship with Android 4.2.2 just like the LG G2 that came before it, and frankly I wouldn’t expect it to run much if any faster than the Snapdragon 800 in the G2 because of the much higher resolution display.

The LG G3 in many colors

LG has also improved the camera on the phone greatly by reducing the focus time to 276 miliseconds, so essentially in 1/4 of a second. They also improved the camera’s optical image stabilization (OIS) by 20% which means that it will be even more stable in taking long exposure photos or when recording videos. The G2 already did this pretty well with the 13 MP camera it had (which the G3 also apparently has). There are also some software improvements in the G3 to make using the LG G3 more photography friendly, but merely in incremental ways.

The back of the LG G3, with the dual LED camera and buttons and speaker

The LG G3 also sports the same battery as the G2 had, with a 3000 mAh battery, however, LG opted to include MicroSD card support in the G3, which means that you can use an SDXC memory card up to 128 GB in your phone if you absolutely find it necessary. Just keep in mind that SD card corruption is possible with Android phones and any data you have on there that isn’t backed up elsewhere could easily be lost and be completely unrecoverable. The phone will come in 16GB and 32GB variants, still without a 64GB variant, which is fine considering that users that really want serious capacity can spring for a microSD card slot.

LG G3

In terms of design itself, the phone is still made of plastic but has a ‘polished metalic skin’ that makes the phone appear as though it is made of metal like the iPhone or HTC One M8. It also follows HTC’s design cues by making the back of the phone curved so that it fits more comfortably inside of users’ hands and simultaneously provides for more space to fit things inside of the phone. This is a welcome improvement from the G2, but isn’t necessarily anything groundbreaking in terms of design or functionality. The buttons are still on the back of the phone, and they are also improved over those that were found on the G2.

LG also completely redid the software on the LG G3, by completely overhauling the G3’s UI to appear much cleaner, refined and simple. They’ve added some unique features to the phone that are designed to compete with some of their competitor’s unlock features. The LG G3 features a knock code feature which allows you to unlock your phone with a specific series of taps. This is obviously more complicated than HTC’s double tap, but it also allows for the phone to be completely unlocked from a sleep state. However, this is still not anywhere as nice as Apple’s or HTC’s simple fingerprint sensor which works with a single swipe. The LG G3 will also feature a Kill Switch, which we’ve been opposed to from a perspective of misuse by security agencies, but you can kill your phone remotely if you lose it or it gets stolen. While many details about the LG G3’s Kill Switch weren’t given, they did say it would allow for the phone to be ‘disabled’, locked, and wiped remotely but didn’t talk about how such features would be managed.

And yes, the LG G3 will have wireless charging capabilities, which means that even though the phone has a ‘metalic skin’ it will still be able to charge and may actually be one of the reasons why LG went with a plastic body and metal skin instead of a solid metal construction like HTC and Apple. Speaking of that, today we also got news that LG is officially the third largest smartphone manufacturer in the world as of Q1 2014, which indicates the company’s efforts are paying off and that their quality products and design are resonating with a global audience. Hopefully we’ll get our hands on a G3 soon so that we can review it and let you know how fantastic that display really is and whether or not the Snapdragon 801 inside of the phone is capable of coping with a 2560 x 1440 display.

Motorola already changed the world quite a bit when they released the midrange Moto G for $179. Now, they’re trying to change it again by releasing the Moto E for $129 and at the same time release an LTE version of the Moto G for $219. The Moto E is Motorola’s attempt to lure the ‘dumbphone’ crowd into the smartphone era without making them commit to anything major in terms of cost or complexity and making sure it will ship with the latest version of Android. They even started a campaign called #GoodByeDumbphone and tried to promote their launch of the Moto E with the idea that people can throw away their dumbphones in favor of this cheap and simple smartphone.

Moto E Cases

The Moto E comes in black or white, but allows you to basically grab any color shell that you want to customize the overall look of the phone to your desires. Additionally, they’ve gone with a very low cost Qualcomm Snapdragon 200 SoC, which is basically the slowest smartphone chip that Qualcomm offers today. And considering the overall goal, which is price, it would seem that nobody would expect this phone to work as quickly as a much more expensive Moto X. What’s very smart on the part of Motorola is that they’ve opted for a fairly large 1980 mAh battery, even though the Snapdragon 200 is a very low power chip. This, combined with the Corning Gorilla Glass and the water resistant design of the phone and you’ve got a pretty sweet little phone in the Moto E. Not just that, but the Moto E can double as a perfect backup phone if anything were to happen to your current Android phone without costing an arm and a leg. The Moto E also comes with a microSD card slot that supports memory cards up to 32GB, which supplements the phone’s existing 4GB of meager storage capacity.

Moto E Black

The Moto E also has a slightly smaller 4.3″ qHD display compared to the 4.5″ display on the Moto G, which may actually be more attractive to some because it results in a smaller phone and a higher pixel density since they both have the same 960×540 resolution. Ultimately, Motorola is making a very simple incremental step up from each of their phones, even though I don’t think the Moto X should be priced at where it currently is and they need a real flagship phone that can compete with Samsung, LG and HTC’s flagships.

The Moto G is also getting an upgrade, primarily with a $40 price premium for the LTE version, enabling cheap phone shoppers to gain fairly good performance on a cheap phone without compromising on cellular connectivity.
